2003-03-13 21:36:00 | Well, thanks everyone for all the suggestions. Can't get any response to the F8 ar Cobtrol key to get into safe mode! Tried to reply to all of you but message says there is an error in the system - something to do with Java. Over and out! had enough. Going back to scanning for a book. cheers

2003-03-13 21:57:00 | the other easy way to get into safemode is to hold down the shift key just after all the bios info on screen. if your pc dosn't display bios info on startup then just hold down shift key while booting and if it looks to have pauses just release the shift key for a sec then continue to hold down shift key again. note- it dosn't work on all pc's but it is far easier than trying to hit f8 just at the right time. | tweak'e (174) | |
2003-03-13 22:20:00 | Hi Have a look at service1.symantec.com Lays out the procedures for starting in Safe Mode for systems from 95 to XP. Looks cumbersome but takes only moments and seems to work everytime for a straight run through Defrag.

2003-03-13 23:13:00 | The other way to get a defrag going without going into SafeMode which appears not to be working for you is to hit once only alt.del.ctl and then select a item from the window and click End Task, repeat the alt.del.ctl as required till all you have left in the system window is systray and explorer. Then try doing your defrag and or scandisk thereafter and when it has finished restart the computer as normal. Slow yes but it is another option.

2003-03-13 23:24:00 | Hi With all due respect to the Ctrl-Alt-Del believers, I was told spme time ago that not all running programs show in the CLOSE PROGRAM window and even when you are trimmed down to the bare necessities, there may be some odd--ball program scratching away in the background. As always, I could be wrong...... Scouse

2003-03-14 00:20:00 | Scouse> Right you are. As in my other post, look for WinTasks 4 on google.co.nz and get a 15 day trial download, then you can run it in normal windows, without rebooting into safe mode :-)
