127617 2003-03-12 21:05:00 It used to be that Domainz (www.domainz.net.nz) were the sole source of names and you could sign up for one through a third party. The reason for the third party was that you couldn't just get a name and shove it in a drawer (so to speak) but had to have it pointing at a physical server somewhere.

The simplist way to get a domain name is to:
- Work out what you want to use as the backend for your site - html? asp? ColdFusion? php? (ie static pages or one that accesses databases)
- Find your host (making sure they support your chosen language)
- See if you can register for a domain name through them.

As regards .com v .co.nz there are advantages to using a .co.nz. Was looking for Carlton Hire recently. Couldn't find it quickly through the search engines so did a domain name search (www.searchnz.co.nz) on Carlton. Finally gave up and rang them and they faxed their price list which had the domain name on it. http://www.carltonhiregroup.com. Brilliant guys! So easy to find (not!)

127618 2003-03-12 23:10:00 If you want a .com, it's cheaper to use an offshore provider eg godaddy (www.godaddy.com). For an NZ provider, I use registerdirect (http:). They give you free parking / redirection, good user control and 10 pop3 email addressess against your domain, for the annual registration fee. wuppo (41)
127619 2003-03-13 04:34:00 wuppo,
I feel that last post was a little misleading. It's not "10 email addresses" at all.

Its INFINITE email addresses that can be forwarded to anywhere, including 10, 10MB POP3 MAILBOXES also provided with the registration.

I might add that the servers for register direct are right here in CHCH, so all traffic is local.

BTW.. i just added another domain to the collection.
registerdirect rocks!

127620 2003-03-13 06:43:00 Hi all

I agree with Mary H. Have a look at Freeparking I have used a number of offshore providers and none beat Freeparking for speed of service and overall helpfulness. They respond rapidly to help queries and show a lot of patience.

On occasion I have made a stupid programming mistake the guys at Freeparking have simply gone in and fixed the problem—then emailed me to explain what was wrong.

127622 2003-03-14 04:22:00 I bought a .co.nz domain (well technically, I rented it for a year) through Nucleus (see earlier post) and have found them excellent to deal with. The domain registration was 39.95 for a year and they give me a fully serviced 40 mb (unlimited sub-domains and email addresses) for 14.95 for four weeks (this 4 weeks business seems to have crept in to a few places lately - a sneaky way of lowering the monthly rate cos there's now 13 'months' per year). All up this works out at about 80cent a day, which is nothing really. I'm certainly happy with the setup.

127623 2003-03-18 05:19:00 Thanks. I am just wanting it for a personal site. Sort of a hobby.

I am still at school and cant afford much, so im looking for something cheap.

I am also looking for web hosting, but they all seem too expensive for not very much.

Im looking for about 15mb+ for $10 or under a month.
