128368 2003-03-15 08:47:00 Hi,
I'm currently looking for a new job, anyway alot of them now have email addresses that you can send to. There is the odd one that uses a Yahoo or Hotmail address. Would I be right in assuming that these companies/businesses are ones that you wouldn't want to get involved with?
Pauline (641)
128369 2003-03-15 09:24:00 I wouldn't automatically assume that Pauline, but I'd use a similar address to contact them, at least initially. They may be inexperienced in email or net matters, or they could just be cheap (or shonky).

Treat them like chat lines or personal columns until bona fides are established. Not that I would know anything about the latter two examples of course. :8}

Cheers

128370 2003-03-15 10:08:00 Hi Billy,

or they could just be cheap (or shonky).
Yes that was my thought too. I would have to change my CV around a bit to use my Hotmail address, & then remove my home phone number as well as postal address then that would make me seem shonky.
You would think that most companies/businesses nowadays would know how to use the internet.
Thanks anyway.
Pauline.

128371 2003-03-15 10:12:00 They seem to have a different system to us,a friend in NY only has MSN email, which is hotmail as you know.! Thomas (1820)
128372 2003-03-15 21:07:00 MSN (or yahoo etc) addresses for email or websites are very popuar in the States, but only for personal use or for spammers/porn merchants etc Thomas. No serious organisation (that I have ever found) uses transient or freebie providers for such an important window to their business.

Pauline is right to be careful and not release her full details, however she could send them an email via hotmail providing a summary of her CV, briefly confiding her concerns and asking for some information about the company plus a mailing address.

If they are offering a serious employment opportunity they won't want to let the possibility of snaring a good employee go by without making some effort to follow up her approach.

No answer means nothing missed.

Cheers

128373 2003-03-16 00:34:00 I agree, that they are just making themselves look cheap. A bit like applying to a job that only has contact details such as The Manager, PO Box xxxx etc.

Part of the reasoning behind this secrecy may be to not let their competition know what they're up to, or not to let an existing staff member know that they're about to get the boot - still, "shonky" is a good word either way!

128374 2003-03-16 01:16:00 shonky-dude@hotmail . com ranks along side "meet me down the ally for an interveiw" .

Mind you spot the NZ bizos with "mybiz@xtra . co . nz" as the address . just as dodgy, just locallised .

128375 2003-03-16 02:14:00 Well I would generally prefer to stay away from a company that uses Hotmail as their email account. Just like I'd be inclined to stay away from one that uses a freehost for their website.

In saying this it also depends on what the company does and if I know others that have used them successfully.

128376 2003-03-16 02:19:00 Its easy enough to more or less hide the fact one is using a freehost . My domains point at free hosts, and so do my partners . Most wouldn't know .

I think it comes down to wanting to see something that ties down to someone .

128377 2003-03-16 02:26:00 For me..... I always look for a street address.

People just don't live in POBoxes so you can't kick them in the kneecaps if things go wrong. I do buy things through the Internet but have always ascertained where they do business first.
