128294 2003-03-15 07:49:00 I really like to hide all my icons on my desktop but then sometimes it's nice to be able to play around with stuff there.

Is there a shortcut to hide/unhide the icons in XP Pro?

128295 2003-03-15 07:53:00 You could try a virtual desktop manager like Cool Desk I think its called for doze...

Check it out in google!

Should be just what you're looking for :-)

Cheers

128296 2003-03-15 08:50:00 Nope not what I'm wanting. Just after a shortcut for the right-click on desktop | Arange Icons | Show Desktop Icons option. -=JM=- (16)
128297 2003-03-15 10:34:00 If you use active desktop and view it as a web page you can hide the icons.
You then place a new toolbar on the Taskbar that shows your desktop.
Here’s how:
1. Right click the desktop choose Properties > Web Tab.
2. Check the box next to “View my Active Desktop as a Web page”.
3. Now click the Folder options button near the bottom of the tab.
4. Click Yes in the dialogue box that pops up. This will open the Folder options dialogue box. Select the View tab.
5. Check “Hide icons when desktop is viewed as a Web page” click OK.
6. Now right click on the Task bar > select Toolbars >Desktop.
7. Your desktop should now be clear and you should also have a new toolbar on the Taskbar called Desktop.

Hope this is what you want oldfart ;-)

128298 2003-03-15 10:46:00 No not exactly what I'm after.

I'm after a shortcut that will hide all icons another that will show them.

I think I might have to find the corresponding registry entry or something.

128299 2003-03-16 10:00:00 This is probably not what you want but perhaps it may give you an idea to build on.

I use Windows 98. I have a folder on my desktop called shortcuts. By dragging and dropping other desktop icons into that folder they are out of sight.

Thinking of your problem, I have just tried the following.

I right clicked that folder and clicked on create shortcut. That gave me a second folder on the desktop, one was the original, the other a shortcut to it.

I then right clicked on the shortcut icon, then properties, then created a KEYBOARD SHORTCUT using the keys Ctr+Alt+S (I created that for the second desktop icon I had just made, as the original did not seem to have an option to let me do it. You will know more about that I guess, but it is beyond me)

I then dragged and dropped the other desktop icons into that one folder.

That left just the two icons on the desktop. I haven't tried to hide both of those in order to completely clear the desktop, perhaps there is a way, no doubt you will find out how.

To access the desktop icons, just press Ctr+Alt+S all at once.

To close the folder just press Alt+F4

Cheers.

128300 2007-01-12 22:17:00 I'm interested in this aswell.

I find right clicking > Arrange Icons By > Show Desktop Icons is a pain, I toggle alot.

The option is likely stored somewhere's in the registry, we may be able to do this yet. It would be especially nice to have a little app in the system tray (next to the clock) that toggles the value when single clicked. But as a start I can settle for a shortcut type solution.

Let see what we can find... how old is this post anyways? wow 2003 I'm going to look into it anyways :stare:

128302 2007-01-12 22:46:00 Windows XP allows you to show/hide the lower start icon bar although I have never found this particularly helpful or useful. Ironically I think that is one of the features that is going to be in Vista with the new Dock concept. Linux has something similar that I think it has had for a while and Apple has been doing it since 2001. winmacguy (3367)
128303 2007-01-12 22:53:00 This was brought up on these forums recently. A workaround is to move all your desktop shortcuts into a new folder, saved wherever, and make a shortcut to it in your quick-launch bar. This means just one click to access them and keeps your desktop clear. Greg (193)
