128624 2003-03-16 10:10:00 I'm experiencing poor dialup perfromance with varying connection speeds generally under 40,000bps and frequent disconections to the point my internet is almost unusable.

What could be the cause? I'm connecting to xtra, seem to have my own line and using a 56k winmodem.

128625 2003-03-16 10:15:00 Have you tried the easiest first?
Disconnect all other phones/faxes/answering machines from the line and see if that improves things.

Actually getting disconnected suggests it could also be noise on the line.
Are you rural? (electric fences!)

Has this always been the case, or just happened?

128626 2003-03-16 12:31:00 Well nothing else is connected to the line, just my modem.

It started gettting this bad soon after shifting to a new flat in a city resisdential area.

128627 2003-03-16 20:00:00 If the problem is new as you indicate as you have just shifted, then it could be a line or exchange fault.

I would suggest calling Xtra/Telecom and seeing if they can check the line for you.
