128689 2003-03-17 00:04:00 I've just been playing with my IE6 browser and netscape 7.0..as i'm trying to find a way to use browsers to stop whoever uses my computer to access pornography...i tried with parental control on nortons internet security...but it works until they find out how to click on the NIS logo in systry and click log off..then that opens the net up to any website...
i tried using rescrited websites in IE6 but nope..
is there anything i can do?..

I just want something to stop porn being veiwed on my computer....and for it to have nothing like NIS, that shows how badly flawed it is..

128692 2003-03-17 00:34:00 OK.. we have a problem here. Basicly what you are asking is to stop a whole lot of something that is not clearly defined.

In order to stop ALL porn (or whateverelse doesn't squeel your wheels) you need to identify ALL sources. This is obviously impractical. The most practical way to get close to this is to list and block any thing that you don't want.

As this could become a fulltime task for a team of people, it is probably better to connect through an ISP that provides a filtering service.

Of course the filters that are used to gain these rather large lists will tend to block alot of other sites. Forget any gender-specific medical information, sites offering clothes, and of course a whole lotta other stuff that may contain a keyword that gets something blacklisted for no good reason.

Probably the best way to stop people from using your computer for tasks you disapprove of, is to not let such people have further use of your computer.

128693 2003-03-17 00:40:00 Well, from what i seeing on my computer, is that its 3 websites they are using to see porn or watever they do with it...and thats thru www.geocities.com, and www.adultcheck.com and www.persiankitty.com or something of that sort.. annd me..i dont even surf the net much, i basically come online to talk 2 my gf (we live diff towns for the moment), and check emails, and the news..and the forever fabulous pressf1.co.nz...and downloads.com..so if theres a way of banning every website...apart from ones i veiw..reguraly...i could write a list down..and add those veiwable ones..and so on...then i'll happily do that..

And ISP...I'm actually stuck on this ISP till october...I paid for 1 year of internet connection so i dont have to worry about bills and stuff...so i'll consider a new ISP when october comes...

128694 2003-03-17 00:57:00 If that ISP is IHUG they have a filtering service.

c:/windows/hosts
Open in notepad (assuming you are using 'doze)

You will see entrys like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 nortons.antivirus

Add these:
0.0.0.0 geocities.com
0.0.0.0 www.geocities.com
0.0.0.0 persiankitty.com
0.0.0.0 www.persiankitty.com
0.0.0.0 adultcheck.com
0.0.0.0 www.adultcheck.com

What these entries do is effectively tell your computer not to look for a computer hosing these sites, as they are "nowhere"

Some people find they have to use 127.0.0.1 instead of 0.0.0.0
I don't know why exactly, 127.0.0.1 is "your own machine" which i assume is not hosting any websites.

128696 2003-03-17 01:03:00 i just went to c:/windows/hosts and it says it needs something to open file..and asked if i wanted to look on net..so i just went to open in notepad..and it said file didnt exist..

if it helps..i using winxp home..

128697 2003-03-17 01:04:00 127.0.0.1 is localhost.. local... host... host.. your PC...

0.0.0.0 is like telling it to go to nowhere and so some prog's throw a wobbly when they're basically told to go out into the net and look for nothing, however if they're told to look for your PC (This comand can be used offline) then they're fine!

128698 2003-03-17 01:07:00 OK.. i dont even use windows anymore, but i suspect that you might need to be logged in as the administrator in order to edit a system file. XP, like Linux, is a little clever like that. This would also stop "guest" users from editing the file.
