128972 2003-03-18 01:41:00 Greetings,

I currently use a 33k external modem on my linux box to connect to my isp. OK I have picked up a 56k external modem (D-Link) and did a straight swap expecting it to work (external modem and all that) but it didn't. I have another 56k modem now (Swann) and this appears to do exactly the same thing i.e. it appears not to detect dial tone (or attempt to dial at all). A light goes on in the modem and the modem retries something 3 times and then gives up. Yes both modems do the same thing. Ummmm I've been trying to login to my Linux box via ssh to check the logs but haven't managed to yet.

128973 2003-03-18 04:33:00 If you've been trying to login remotely as root, that shouldn't work. :D Security. Login as a "user", then su to use root privilege. Graham L (2)
128974 2003-03-18 04:44:00 So Graham, any ideas about the modems ?:| . I feel like throwing them out the window (so much for upgrades). I do wonder if 33k modems and under are more tolerant of NZ phone lines... but then, the modems don't appear to "take the receiver off" to try and dial.

Re the ssh... if I connect a monitor to the Linux box then I don't need to login remotely.

128975 2003-03-18 04:51:00 Well, look at the logfiles first. You can use a terminal emulator to dial out too, and get immediate feedback. If you just plugged the 56k modem in instead of the 33k one without actually setting it up properly, it might not work. The fact that it dials is encouraging. Graham L (2)
128976 2003-03-18 05:17:00 Same problem as you. I could not get a D-Link external to work with SuSe.In fact there are lots of things that won't work in Linux. Scanners, printers, and modemsfor a start. Even my USB I-Feel mouse only works occasionaly.
Do what I did and reload Win XP.

128977 2003-03-18 05:53:00 Not very helpful, Jack. I believe that there is quite a lot of hardware which doesn't work with Windows XP, too. It's not compulsory to use Linux if you don't want to, or find it too difficult. It's not compulsory to use Windows, either. ;-)

DD: check through the Modem-HOWTO, in case you've missed something in the set up. The Hardware-HOWTO might be worth a look too.

128978 2003-03-18 06:20:00 I used to be able to connect to the internet in Suse with an internal 56k modem but when I changed to an external US Robotics I wasn't able to connect anymore. The message in the log says NO DIAL TONE, I have tried turning stupid mode on and off among other things, I am still clueless as how to establish a connection.

Also, I have been doing mostly everything under XP since for some reason many programs just seem to crash under Suse. When I was using mulitmedia players or KSpread for example, it just crashed after about 2-10 minutes. Really really annoying.

128979 2003-03-18 09:34:00 Actually I use Linux AND Win 2000. I couldn't even get the modem to work under Windows 95 (ok its old but I know it well!). Bl**dy computers :D Dolby Digital (160)
128980 2003-03-18 22:26:00 Re Windows XP. Hear, hear. I can't get my 56K modem (either the internal (Puretek, Taiwan - PCcompany cheapskates) or the external one (Dynalink) to work.

After some pain I managed to get both of them recognised by the system, but I still can't set up a functioning link to ParadiseNet; or ClearNet.

I have cable, so not great problem, but I'd like a reserve in the event of a cable dropout.
