128944 2003-03-18 00:47:00 I'm an absolute newbie at this, so this question may be totally meaningless or totally trivial!

If I want to edit some digital video, but don't have a capture card (or any editing software - yet!), is there a file format that someone who _does_ have a card can use to capture the video and put it onto CD-ROM for me to then do the editing?

Also, any recommendations for easy-to-use shareware editing software? - Doesn't need to be hugely sophisticated, I just want to have some fun tarting up a single very short home video, which will then be sent around the family on CD-ROM.

TIA for all suggestions.

128945 2003-03-18 11:19:00 it depends on what sort of editing you need.

you can try virtualdub and virtualdubmod(vbr support). look here (www.doom9.org).

128946 2003-03-18 22:40:00 Thanks for that. Do you have an answer to my first question, about file formats? tbacon_nz (865)
128947 2003-03-18 23:12:00 the file format used may depend on the card used and the capture software. some capture cards only work with certain software. try to advoid proprietry formats like real (rm,ram) and quicktime(mov) as they can be a major pain to convert.(quicktime isn't to bad but real is a major pain)

don't use mpeg1 its crap. either use mpeg2(dvd) or 4(divx,xvid,quicktime,real). i suggest try to use avi format and a well known codec (divx, xvid) and don't forget the sound either. with avi there is a lot of free software for cutting/joining/basic editing/repairing avi files.

128948 2003-03-19 05:28:00 AVI Files are the best as far a quality goes, however they take up a LOT of space.

MovieXOne is a free, good, video editing program. www.aistinc.com

You just need to fill in a quick form, then download it (about 25mb)

128949 2003-03-19 05:29:00 By a "lot" of space, I mean about 100mb per minute, so you need a decent sized hard drive. somebody (208)
128950 2003-03-19 05:39:00 The original video is about 20 minutes, so if I want to receive the original file and then redistribute the masterpiece on CD-ROm , I guess .avi is not an option. What would be a good compromise? tbacon_nz (865)
128951 2003-03-19 07:13:00 <sigh> avi does not take up a lot of space. the whole point of useing mpeg4 is to increase compression so you can fit more onto a disk. why would we convert dvd to divx if space wasn't an issue? afaik most capture cards will capture in a raw (ie semi uncompressed) format which then can be compressed to avi (divx etc) so it can fit on a disk. depending on quality and your net connection a 20min video could be sent over the net to you. tweak'e (174)
128952 2003-03-19 09:48:00 I'm sorry to be so ignorant, but as I said in my first post, I'm an absolute newbie at this, and what I have to do is give instructions to a teenager in England on what to do (using school equipment) with the video he shot when he was here in NZ, and it is still not clear quite clear to me what I should be saying. ?:| Something like:

"Download the video from the camera and convert it/save it (or whatever) to xxx, put it onto a CD-ROM and snail-mail it to me, or if it is less than x megabytes, email it (if your connection will stand it)."

Where xxx is avi or mpeg4 or what?

When I receive it, I shall do do some editing and add some bells and whistles, then put it on CD-ROM in its turn and send it round the family.

This is purely a "for amusement only" project so I can get a feel for what is involved/can be done.

Hope this makes sense...

128953 2003-03-19 11:01:00 sorry i can't really help with the capture part but generally speaking once he/she downloads the movie from the camera to the pc it will be in what ever format the capture card software uses. hopefully he/she will be able to compress it to a smaller size so that it can fit onto a cd or be sent over the net.

basicly what tools you need to edit it with will depend on what software is used with the capture card. if he/she has a choice, avi format and a decent codec would be best.

most formats (eg real, mov avi) have several different codecs which can be used.
