128865 2003-03-17 10:29:00 Sometimes as Windows loads and just as the Desktop appears along with the “Fanfare”, the fanfare sometimes cuts out mid-stream. As a result my system has no sound.
And sometimes Windows loads with no sound at all.
A re-boot usually rectifies the “lack of sound” problem.

The second problem I have is; when playing an audio CD on my PC the sound cuts out when I request a print job from the file I am working on. Once again a re-boot is required to restore sound.

When searching the Windows Help on my system and after selecting the appropriate “symptom” regarding lack of sound in the index under Sound or DirectX troubleshooters there is no info (I am prompted to connect to my ISP), which I did but there was still no info forthcoming from Windows Help.

My system is a Gateway Essential PIII 650 with Integrated Intel 3D Graphics and Audio originally on 128MB SDRAM but upgraded to 254MB SDRAM, but I’m still having the same sound problem after upgrading the RAM. The graphics controller (Intel (R) 82810E Version 4.13.01.3196) has also been updated with a new version dated 23/07/02.

Finally, would my system have DirectX files? If so, how do I find out which version I have and would an update to a better and later version be advisable.

PS I am not a computer geek so please go easy on me!

128866 2003-03-17 13:01:00 hi,
i had the same problem with onboard(integrated) sound on winXP. tried the latest drivers and patches and still the problem would occur intermittently. so i disabled the onboard sound and put in a PCI sound card and have never had the problem since.
(i've never been a fan of onboard sound/graphics)

directX. yeah, you'll have one version of it. to find out which, type:

dxdiag

at the run box on the start menu. the latest version is directX 9.0
you can download it from windows update (there is a link to that on the start menu, and on the tools menu in internet explorer)

ps. hopefully someone else has a solution to the sound problem that isn't taking the easy way out like i did...;-)
