128823 2003-03-17 09:46:00 I have a friend whose computer quite often gets all manner of rubbish installed on it when her back is turned. This has caused certain problems. This machine needs to be reliable as it is an earner for her.

How good would XP be at preventing this scenario when the guest user goes to install the latest amazing game found on the net?

128824 2003-03-17 10:13:00 I have my computer set up so that my administrator account is password protected and no other account is permitted to install programs. As long as I log off when I am not on the computer then the rest of the family are stuffed. :D

Win XP Home -- next best thing to the internet. ;-)

128825 2003-03-17 10:17:00 Odd...
CyberChuck just successfully installed SmartFTP on his XP machine as a test. No admin rights needed.

Seems it's all in how it was set up!

128826 2003-03-17 10:19:00 You want to make a "Limited" user account.
Go to control panel, user accounts, and finally create new account.
Give the account a name... next... and then select "limited".... and create...
You can give the all accounts passwords. You can change the pics. You could even get logonui and change the logon screen. You could get a cool pic instead of the winblows logo.
There is a little info to read when you set these up... just a little.

128827 2003-03-17 10:20:00 Actually, you had better wait for confirmation from others about that, because I just read the following regarding Limited Accounts:

Users with limited accounts cannot always install programs. Depending on the program, a user might need administrator privileges to install it.

So far I have been asked to install things so I am not sure what programs could be permitted. No one else really gets much of a chance to use this Beast. :D

128828 2003-03-17 11:16:00 Howdy Clueless,

I have Win2K running restricted user accounts and was unable to load SmartFtp. I must admit that I tried their recommended installation from their server rather than downloading the actual program. Don't know if that would make any difference though.

If XP is the same as Win2K when you set up a new user you can set the options so that the user can have admin rights through to no programs can be loaded.

Unfortunatly history has shown that this could only be inforced by locking the machine away from the whole family, or installing an OS with the security quality i'm looking for here. Linux isn't an option here either, so i'm forced to look for a doze solution.

*wonders if XP is like Linux in so much as only the superuser can install anything that needs to install itself in or over the top of any component in the heart of the system*

Really, Clueless??... YOU will be forced to look for a "doze" solution? I guess you must be talking about someone else's OS here... I would never assume that you would assume that you could explore other options for my home OS!!!!!

Um........I'm checking out options for your PC, and I assume (is that wise?) that you would not approve a Linux option.

Of course a Linux option could offer far better security from installation of unwanted progs by "guest" users, and M$ office etc could run via wine or something. But as you are a M$ kinda gal, 'doze is the angle i will research.

*thinks... perhaps i could get photoshop + office running on Sam just to see how it goes in a Linux enviroment?*
