128738 2003-03-17 04:28:00 A computer I am using in a Recording Studio is functioning strangely.

It is an AthlonXP 2000+, 512mb DDR, 36.6GB SCSI Hard drive (10k rpm I think). I don't know why it seems to take a long time for Windows Media Player to open a file. I have used it to play CDs, mp3s, wave files, and it takes about a minute to open the file and start playing.

It also occasionally plays songs at half speed, for some odd reason, when it plays others fine.

Judging from the specs, I can't see why such a fast computer would have these issues. Does anybody have any ideas?

Note: The same version of Windows Media Player functions perfectly on my computer at home, which is a 1.4ghz Athlon, 256mb RAM, 20GB HDD.

128739 2003-03-17 04:47:00 Could be a conflict with other Software drivers etc plus it may be trying to phone home as many of M/soft applications do these days ,
try a earlier version or zoomplayer which is far smaller and less resource hungry not to mention far more powerful and versatile .

128740 2003-03-17 05:45:00 It might be trying to contact sites on the Internet. If it's not actually connected to the Internet, it could easily spend a minute before giving up. :D Graham L (2)
128741 2003-03-17 06:12:00 When it could access the internet, it still was that slow (that's on a Jetstream internet connection).

I'm worried that it's a hardware or software conflict. I do know that the soundcard is to blame for a number of other software problems, however the manufacturer (Gadgetlabs) has gone out of business, so we can't really ask them for help.
