128954 2003-03-18 01:31:00 My HDD has crashed and I can't recover any of the information from it. I have a 40 GB Western Digital HDD that I had installed in an HP PC that only supports a 20GB HDD. If I take the HDD drive out and install it in a PC that supports a 40GB HDD will I be able to recover the data? Is there a better solution to my problem?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

128955 2003-03-18 03:16:00 what do you mean "crashed" ???

yes putting the drive in another system will most likely let you get some/all of your data back depending on waht happened to the drive,.

128956 2003-03-18 03:28:00 If your HDD has "crashed" (as in it has failed) then I must be missing some information, how will putting it in another PC allow access to a failed HDD?

If on the otherhand its only got damaged operating system files that will not allow it to boot, putting it in another system (changing the jumpers on the HDD as required for slave, if it is to be a slave on IDE 1) may allow the data to be read.

There are too many variables to your question with insufficient info provided to be more specific.

128957 2003-03-18 13:43:00 well to be honest I am not sure if the disk is recoverable or not. Thanks for you help, I am going to try putting it in another PC and we'll see what happens. brassmonkey (3391)
