129466 2003-03-19 10:23:00 I have just had DSL installed to my house. Overall the service is fair, but I have a couple of issues with the whole deal. When I turn my PC on, the DSL service initialises almost straight away (I have an internal modem). However, once I connect to the ISP, the connection will die as soon as I use it, and the service goes down for about a minute before re-initialising. Once I re-connect it is fine.

This problem always occurs the first time I connect, even if (like tonight) I turn the computer on and leave it on for more than an hour without connecting - this whole time the DSL modem reports an active data signal. I then connect, and down it goes.

What is causing this problem, and where does it lie? Is it with my hardware, my ISP, of Telecom itself?

I have a brand new Dynalink ADSL modem, with the GlobespanVirata Chipset, (if that means anythingto anyone), I am running XPSP1, and I am on the paradise Jetstart plan.

Also, the data transfer rate is VERY erratic. On my old dial up, using the data meter of Sygates firewall, the data would pick up to a rate of about 5.2Kbps and sit there for hours on end. With the DSL it leaps all over the place and often pauses for a time and restarts. This is a problem because some of the servers I use have a minimum traffic rate and if I am idle for 30 seconds I get disconnected and lose my place in the queue.

Can I do anything to improve this - I would even take a speed hit if the rate could be smoothed out to a constant flow...

Cheers,
Craig.

129467 2003-03-19 10:48:00 I thank it might be paradise, because I was chatting to some who is also on ADSL with your ISP & we where chatting about connection speeds & he was saying thing like "Jet Stop" & "Slow Start" so I am guessing that paradise ADSL is not that good.

Do you know any one who is with a different ISP & has ADSL??? If you do ask them if you could try & connect with there ISP & see if you have the same problems.

Also try & get in contact with paradise & see what they say...

129468 2003-03-19 11:39:00 I connect with Telecom ADSL, 128k (Jetstart)
Speed is always a constant (net congestion excepted) of around 16 - 17 kB/s (which is about right for 128k)

I never disconnect though (external router)

Whats your distance from the exchange? Internal ADSL modems are reputedly not as good as external routers for sensitivity. I am about 2 kM from the exchange. At full ADSL speed I have seen a connect speed of 2.2 Megabits/sec at this site, checked it on the xtra games site which removes the 128 k cap.

When you connect, you should be assigned an IP address. There is apparently a shortage of IP addresses, wonder if they only assign it when you try to use the connection, which could cause the situation you see?

Need an ADSL tech to confirm/deny I guess.

129469 2003-03-19 22:35:00 I am on Paradise JetStart and there is no issue for me. The connection has been solid for 42 days now without being down.
When transfering stuff the transfer speed is 15-17 KBytes/sec which is what you expect from JetStart.

Using a meter however shows rates 5KB/sec to 74 KB/sec but again this is normal as it the way JetStart works and you do get small bursts of speed initially but it soon slows.

129470 2003-03-20 08:59:00 The issue I have is with the actual ADSL I think, because the problem occurs before I connect sometimes, I have a tray icon that monitors the DSL modem itself - not the internet connection - and it has three states: no signal, training, and data. Quite often the net connection will drop, and the tray icon will switch to no signal, and step up through training (which is explained as establishing the modulation and data type of the end system) to data, and I can now connect.

My connection was installed a telecom rep as the wiring of my house had to be changed and I am about 1.5 - 2Km from the exchange.

Is there any way I can physically monitor the status of the adsl link myself, like I used to do with a dial-up modem to see if the link acually is dropping or if it is a software issue?

Cheers,
Craig.

129471 2003-03-20 09:34:00 Hi Craig

I'm on Paradise Jetstart and have no probs 16-18KB/s. Might be time to get the telecom tech back to check the istallation and setup.

Cheers
