129200 2003-03-18 08:35:00 Hi Liam and others. I figured you could help me out the most Liam as you said you have set up the same router a few weeks ago.

Telecom will enable JetStart for us on the exchange tomorrow and my ISP has activated my account, however I want to get this LAN set up done.

Goin on Liams advice I bought the Dynalink RTA300 ADSL modem, and it works great. This is the first time however that I have set up a LAN and I need a little advice :)

Ok we have 3 computers that need networking..
1) Win95, P200mmx
2) Win2000, Celeron 1.5Ghz Laptop
3) WinXp Pro, Athlon 1.1Ghz

I've got all the network cards installed and all the cables are connected up to the router and that is detecting the conections fine. The Win2000, and XP machine have a little computer connected icon that says it is connected to the LAN at 100Mbps, however the win95 one doesnt have this icon??? Is it supposed to?

Thing is when I go into network neighbourhood/my network places, and go into the 'computers near me' or try and search for the other computers that are supposedly on the network, it won't find the other computers. it says there are none??

I've set up most of the stuff that it says to in the router manual. And I can play LAN games with my brother, using 2 different games, so there is a connection happening.

How come I can't see the other computers in network neighbourhood?
Also we're using 2 DSE network cards, and they work ok, XP works, but I think the drivers for Win95 didn't install properly. When they try to install, it gets part way through, then it requests something else, thats not on the cd ..so I dunno..

Suggestions? :)

Use TCP/IP and don't ignore Netbui as an option either. It will help link W95 to W2K/XP. I have set up both and networking was a breeze, as was internet access.

You will have to set up different IP addresses for each box, subnet mask will be 255.255.255.0 and the gateway will be the IP address of your router. You also have to enable sharing for printers and disks to get evertythin on speaking terms.

Go to the networking FAQ, that will help you through.

129202 2003-03-18 12:45:00 I have a problem installing the drivers on the Win95 system. It detects it all fine, but when it comes to installing the drivers off the DSE cd, it starts installing some of the files off the cd, and then requests that I put in the Windows 95 cd, so it can copy lots of files from it.

Problem is we only have a win95 recovery cd that came with the computer. And that doesn't work - Dammit!!

Anyone got some ideas??? I really need jetstart working on this comp or my dad will get pretty pissed off at me..

129203 2003-03-18 21:41:00 The Win95 files are usually installed onto the PC so you shouldn't need a CD.

Default location is C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

Try that when it asks for the Windows 95 CD.
If that doesn't work do a quick search on your HDD for *.cab files and you should get a few like win95_02.cab win95_03.cab etc then see what folder they are in.

129204 2003-03-18 21:57:00 What drivers are you trying to install on the W95 box? That might give a clue to what W95 is trying to find to complete the installation .

There should also be CAB files on the 95 HDD that might contain the files required but as a faster solution, you could consider borrowing a W95 CD to get you over this hump .

Alternatively, you could buy a secondhand W98 or 98SE CD and kill two birds with one stone by upgrading the OS at the same time .

it always asks to reinstall the files eacch time you change a network setting. if you havn't got the cabs on the hardrive simply bypass the files off the cd. most of the time they are not needed as they are already installed. if you are installing a new protocol it may be different however.

129206 2003-03-19 23:25:00 OK the win95 machine got those files it was needing off the cd...using the cabs on the c:\windows\options\cabs..

Everyone can connect to the net fine through the Jetstream..Thing is I still can't get the WinXP and 2000 machines to recognise the win95 machine on the network.

The XP machine can recognise the 2000 one after about 10mins of waiting after I plugged the cord in. With the windows 95, I can't seem to access anything in the network neighbourhood.. It brings up a dialogue box saying cannot browse the network, every single time.

I've had a read through of the FAQ as well, any ideas??

129209 2003-03-24 11:06:00 As far as I know, there was no Microsoft feature that showed LAN connection with the "two little pc's" . It was only a feature for dial-up connections . godfather (25)
