Are they good and reliable? Which is better, in terms of performance vs value (money)?

Cheers

129586 2003-03-20 04:53:00 Hi ya - I was just looking at a copy of the Dec 02 /Jan 03 New Zealand PC World mag and there is some information in there on these printers and others. Ladybug (3129)
129587 2003-03-20 06:39:00 Hi bk T

here's my 2 cents worth. I had an Epson printer, not sure of model but only 1 year old so fairly new(cost in $500 range). The thing was a heap of junk. Most annoying thing was the noise it made printing... like standing next to a railway line. Recently purchased HP5550 because we had the previous model in our office and it got a lot of use without so much as a hiccup. Good things about 5550... not too expensive to buy, well built (unlike Epson), easy to set up, easy front load/stack paper tray, very quiet when printing and the major thing if you print a bit is that it has a cancel print button on front of printer... if it don't look right you don't waste expensive ink/paper... I don't think the Epsons have this feature and their inks are about the same price as HP. Overall print quality (printing high qual colour from digital camera) is excellent. 9 out of 10 in my books... even looks quite nice too!

Hope it helps

129589 2003-03-20 21:33:00 HI bk

I have a DJ5550 and I would have to say that I am very pleased with it.
It is inexpensive and gives a high quality print.

I also work for a photographer who uses an Epson (I cannot think of the model) but it is a high-end printer. To my eye it does not do a better print job and is very expensive to run.
A point about Epson is that they have fix print heads. This means that they are not replaced when you replace the cartridge. Epson use a different type of print head to HP, in some respects it is superior.
HP on the other hand the print head is part of the cartridge. The real point is that when you need to replace Epson print heads it cost a lot of money in most cases it is not economic—you just replace the printer.

129590 2003-03-20 22:38:00 It would pay to check out the running costs of those two printers before making a decision. When it comes time to replace toner cartrides or drums (or whatever) some are way more expensive than others.

Do a search on the forum for Laser Printers with godfather as the UserName and you will find some good information on what to watch out for.

129591 2003-03-21 07:12:00 Just as a matter of interest the Epson stylus Photo 915 was just voted the best by PC World. Also the colour cartridge for this printer is about $30 were as the HP cartridge is about $85 you work it out.

The HP cartridge looks much more expensive than Epson, but someone told me that if you were to work out the actual running cost per page, they are the same, if not, cheaper. This is something quite dificult to find out?

129593 2003-03-21 21:49:00 Hi bk T again,

Looking back to the Epson I had (and it's not the C51), the ink was the same price as the 5550... maybe the new one is cheaper, I don't know, but the cartridges in the 5550 seem to last as well, if not better. This is slightly subjective of course, depending on what you're printing, but I tend to print only full colour full page on both with very little just text.

A few issues that you should check if worried about the cost of ink:

As I said, the 5550 has cancel print button, very good if worried about wasting ink. My Epson didn't have this feature.

On the Epson I had it was almost impossible to change cartidges before they were finished, ie: if one was faulty. No info in inst book, had to search Epson site to find out how.

Epson appeared to do very thorough print head clean on start up... wastes time and ink, besides being hellishly noisy! Also Epson seemed to require regular head clean if not used for a week or so as ink tended to dry out... more delays.

5550 has an option in the print menu (that you can set as default) for amount of ink you use on each print, ie: if you don't want absolutely pefect prints you can lessen amount of ink used. I adjusted to about 1/2 max and the prints are still great (if not as good). I know the Epson didn't have this feature.

Hope this helps,

Joe
