129702 2003-03-22 10:28:00 You make a fairly good point. I have tried various Operating systems over the years. I started with a Burroughs B3500 using MCP (Master Control Program ). A mainframe computer occupying a whole room. I was progamming this using COBOL 12k of core memory.

Now instead of driving my Model T Ford I'm in a Rolls Royce nearly.

I'm happy using WinXP Pro. I was dragged ( kicking and screaming into Win 3.11 from MSDOS 6.22.

Windows (any version) in those days just seemed a waste of time as people just spent time moving windows about and improved the Desktop rather than actually running an application like WordPerfect, Word, Works, Excel, Visicalc, Lotus123 etc.

I have tried other operating systems but I really have to be productive and use OfficeXP, PhotoShop.

I have a fairly high investment in application software which runs under WinXP. I have had to pay for the O/S and applications and I have spent a few years learning how to use the various programs that comprise Office. I started Office with Version 4.3 and am just now going to a course which will give me NZCC Levels 2 and 3.

Don't get me wrong. PLAY with your O/S, software, Games, Batch files.
Read Manuals... Poke about... I hadn't actually opened a computer until 7 years ago. I did this to replace a 5 1/4 floppy disk drive with a CDRom drive. I think it took about two hours.

Tonight I put another hard drive plus a DVD \ ROM and extra RAM into the computer I am using now in 20 minutes or so. It took my diagnostic software about 40 minutes to check the extra RAM ( now 1 Gig )

Take your choice. Get in your CAR and drive it. If you are not happy driving that one then buy another. (Model T vs Ferrari).

Not all of us can afford the Ferrari or whatever.

It is the only way you will learn. Don't forget to backup first though.

129703 2003-03-22 10:34:00 I must admit if someone asked me tonight just how to install an ISA modem under Windows 3.11 I would have to go to the Internet to check.

Long time since I did it. :D

Have you guys read the latest LinuxJournal article on UnitedLinux.... It might not necessarily be the best thing for the Linux community.

Cheers

129709 2003-03-22 12:17:00 Linux appears to be more computer sensitive than windows , I tried a SuSE 7.x version that came out a couple of years ago on my Pentium 4 and it would not install, while windows 98 is very happy,

I had a lot of blue screens with windows 98 on my first install, but then I destroyed the windows install and reinstalled windows, and did not install all the drivers from the CDROM as the mother board book said, I only installed the drivers as I needed them, e.g. 16 colors looked horrible, so I did the drivers to get 32 bit color, then I thought sound would be cool to have going .......

I started on a B3700 using MCP. This one had 0.5MB main memory. Loved those teletype spo's.

129711 2003-03-23 04:23:00 MCP was a luvverly OS. The only OS which compiled job control decks. Burroughs Extended Algol --- the very best programming language. Of course, you had to read the manuals (and Gregory's books were brilliant) :D Graham L (2)
