129823 2003-03-21 05:36:00 Well I did it, installed XP, and it went like a charm, no problems - except - the modem won't work . Fortunately I did a new install and kept win 98SE running (otherwsie I wouldn't be writing this . ) and can still access the net . Printer, scanner and all else working fine .

I did a serach in Google which eventually led me to a discussion of the problem at:

. modemhelp . net/vblite/showthread . php3?threadid=1469 . " target="_blank">www . modemhelp . net

This then led me to Windows XP drivers . com and a long list of drivers . My moden is simply listed as:

Generic Soft 56 Data/Fax/Voice/Speakerphone PCI modem .

Would anyone have any idea which of the drivers listed at:

. com/category/10 . htm" target="_blank">windowsxp-drivers . com might do the trick?

I guess I could seek a solution from the OEM in Timaru, but I can surely solve this without paying $50 an hour, or more! I wonder if my ISP support might have some ideas .

So, if anyone can offer a suggestion, most grateful .

When I have everything sorted, I'll go back format C: and install as an upgrade .

Sorry I couldn't get rid of the text above formatted as a URL .

129824 2003-03-21 06:54:00 Well done Sami.

In my case (on 2 computers) no driver would work, and I tried heaps.
I tossed the modems out, as they were obviously totally incompatable with XP.

One would actually crash to a blue screen, the other would work fine the first time it connected, then crash on any subsequent connection.

In fairness though, the compatability wizard told me they would not work, and I replaced them with real modems (external serial hardware ones)

129825 2003-03-21 08:46:00 In win98, if you right click my computer , and choose properties. Then click the modem, what does it say it is? Do you know the model & make of it. Mine is a Lucent winmodem and is OK with XP. I know with HSF modems, it can be a pain to install. Pheonix (280)
129826 2003-03-21 18:32:00 Thanks. In properties it simplys says:
Generic Soft 56 Data/Fax/Voice/Speakerphone PCI modem

Preinstalled in a new machine, the modem came without any literature and I have no proprietory name. In my old machinem still running Win 95 it quite clearly states "Dynalink".

I think I'll ring the maker this morning to see if they can provide a fix. Curiously, shortly after I bought the comp - XP arrived and they were urging me to upgrade - but at that time probably did not know that there would be a problem with the modem supplied.

129827 2003-03-22 04:21:00 modems are the most common problem you will experience with XP upgrades. especially software modems. the pc coy offer some driver upgrades via the net.
i have one here...excerpt from info file on it
