130165 2003-03-22 22:24:00 Hi all,
I have just purchased a new machine (AthlonXP 2100+) with 512MB of DDR-RAM (2700) on a Soyo KT400 motherboard. The only place I skimped on was the RAM, getting generic RAM rather than name brand stuff, but the machine seems to periodically slow down dramically sometimes during fairly routine tasks - almost as though there are tasks running in the background.
I have WinXP Pro and am careful to restrict background tasks. I use a very fast HDD (Western Digital WD800JB) and an 8x AGP MX440 graphics card so really I should be able to throw about anything at this machine without it breaking a sweat.
I wondered if the cheaper RAM might be causing these problems, is that possible? Or should I be looking at the CPU? Could there be a problem with insuffient cooling or something?
Thanks,
T

130166 2003-03-22 23:12:00 I have never had an problems with generic ram. You can have problems with name-brand stuff as well. Baldy (26)

Lo.

130168 2003-03-22 23:43:00 The easiest test for RAM is to do a memtest from http://www.memtest86.com you can download a floppy image or an ISO that you then booth the computer with and it will run through and test the RAM.

With generic RAM it is more luck of the draw you may get really good stuff or you may not. With name brand RAM you *should* get better RAM.

130169 2003-03-23 03:11:00 If your generic memory is faulty the computer won't "slow down". It will get errors, which will sooner or later crash programmes/OS.

It's only human "wet logic" which "slows down" processing.

If your computer is slowing down as if there are extra tasks running, there are almost certainly extra tasks running. :D
