129900 2003-03-21 10:49:00 Hi guys

I’m one of the world’s worst spellers. It is an affliction I try to hide as much as possible. For example I’m writing this in Word so that I can eliminate as many mistakes as I can.

The other day I came across a little app called ieSpell and it will do a Spell Check in any Internet Explorer form or window. The program installs as a new button in the IE toolbar (as well as a new menu item under "Tools")—after filling in a form, just hit the ieSpell button and it pops up a dialog, similar to the MS Word spell check. It’s free for personal and not-for-profit use.

If your like me then you may like to check out ieSpell (http://www.iespell.com/). I recommend it. The main benefit is that it is much quicker that a browser based spell checker like the Press F1 example.

I find that I am quite reliant on Spell Checkers but I really hate it when my spelling mistake is actually the correct spelling for another word. The Spell checker gives me ten out of ten and I end up looking a fool—when someone points the error out to me.

129904 2003-03-21 23:52:00 Hello Oldfart
In these days of computers and spell checkers bad spelling is not so horrendous but if you are from my era it was a very punishable sin...I vividly REMEMBER at Primary School in STD 4 when the headmaster took a Spelling Test every Friday and each one we got wrong was " one cut" on the hand.....a cut was from a black Strap about 4" wide and about 10' down from the handle divided in the 5 small straps.....yes it hurt......but now nearly all of STD 4 are now good spellers..... As it was many years ago I will reveal his name...MR ABEL ......Musselborough Primary DUNEDIN....

129905 2003-03-22 00:03:00 HI olldaddy76

I remember the days.

I used to get so many words wrong the teacher stopped strapping me. The rule was we had twenty five words to learn and received a cut of the strap for every incorrect answer.
Most times I would get most of the words wrong. All the kids thought that this teacher was a heartless old sod but he didn't have the stomach to stand there and give me twenty cuts.

The unfortunate thing about spell checkers is they are not infallible.

129908 2003-03-22 03:11:00 I'm not sure where I saw this, but a test was done on university students a while ago. Asked to write and proofread "manually" an essay, the highest graded (in the US SAT test) students had an average of 5 spelling errors, and the lower graded ones had 7. Similar groups who used a spelling checker scored 16 and 17 errors. Graham L (2)

Are we to conclude that we should not use spell checker?
