129846 2003-03-21 06:56:00 I have a 2 year old(ish) IBM-DTLA-307030. I'm pretty sure its Ultra ATA-100 (from www4.tomshardware.com).

The benchmark from SiSoftware is 22850 kB/s. This seems rather slow to me.
Question - is this a slow benchmark - if it is, is their something I can do to take it to full speed (in the bios perhaps)?

The rest of my system is AMD XP 1600+, PC Chips M825 AMD Motherboard (http://www.pcchips.com.tw).
Thanks in advance.
Paul

129847 2003-03-21 07:24:00 Hi

Is DMA enabled? Go to control panel (assuming windows ?) System > Device Manager for win95-98 or 2k System > Hardware > Device Manager (tab) and look for IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers expand the + and double click on your hard disc goto the settings tab and enable DMA or Ultra DMA if it is available.

129849 2003-03-21 12:55:00 Yep.

Is it the benchmark that is causing you to enquire or are your access times slow. Try another benchmark. The data rate of a drive will rarely hit peak (100MB/s) and only for a brief time at that. It will also need all things to be in favour, right cable for eg; 80wire. If the comp is not appreciabley slow or slowing down don't worry too much. Have a cruze around here I find this site very helfull techtutorials.com

129850 2003-03-21 13:54:00 have a hunt for a prog by the name of HDTACH. this will benchmark you drive. however it wont be a real life speed as windows makes the biggest diffence in speed. things like antivirus can influence the hardrive speed. tweak'e (174)
129851 2003-03-21 22:08:00 Remember also to install your motherboard drivers, etc. I had a Maxtor ATA133 which wasn't performing. Realised I had forgotten to install the relevant drivers for the mobo!
