130040 2003-03-22 06:04:00 I successfully set up a network between my Windows XP Home computer and an old Win98SE machine, using the Network Setup Wizard on XP, and the Network Setup Wizard from the XP CD on the Win98 machine. I had it running well early last year.

It is done using a crossover cable.

It worked ok for a while, but there have been some ongoing problems.

1. Both only seem to be able to see each other computer when the Windows XP Home computer is logged in under my account. All user accounts (there are 3) have admin rights.

2. Recently, I cannot share files when I have Sygate firewall going. In order to access shared folders, I have to disable the firewall (and re-enable after finished).

3. It recently doesn't work consistently. Even with the firewall disabled, I sometimes can't access the other computer.

Today I installed SP1 for Windows from the February PC World CD.

Windows XP Home computer specs (approx 1 year old):
*AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4ghz CPU
*256mb DDR RAM
*32mb nVidia video card (TNT2)
*20GB HDD

Windows 98SE computer specs (approx 6 years old):
*Pentium S 133 CPU
*64mb RAM
*2GB HDD

Any ideas anybody?

130041 2003-03-22 08:00:00 the sygate firewall is proberly blocking the netbios ports. check the firewall setup.

the other way around it is to use ipx/spx for the windows fileshareing. ipx wil bypass the firewall alltogether. don't forget to enable netbios for ipx support.
