130310 2003-03-23 06:26:00 Hello, I've just had a look at a second hand computer, the specifications are the following

Intel Pentium III 700 Mhz
128Mb Ram
6 Gb
Creative soundcard
Elsa 16MB Video Card
Floppy disk
36x CD-Rom
Logitech Internet Navigator Keyboard
Normal Mouse
Large speaker, subwoofer i think.
17" monitor
(m/b unknown)

The price the owner has set is $500, however I'm not wanting to pay that much for it. They are moving overseas. The only slight problems is with the power switch near the case, it won't function properly, therefore you have to turn it off at the mains stright after shuting down.

I'm just wondering if anyone could give me suggestions as whether it will run Windows XP Pro on Jetstart, networked. With only general office activities.

Any comments? How much do you think I should neogoiate with the owner?

*BTW, in case you're wondering, I've just thought of leaving the "new pc purchase" for later due to my VERY TIGHT budget* lolz,

130311 2003-03-23 06:32:00 XP will be a VERY tight fit on this machine, the Ram is on the low side especially. You'd be better off with Win 98 IMO. flying_green_leprachaun (1767)
130312 2003-03-23 06:36:00 I do have an idea about Xp, I'm only really wanting to know what price I should be neogoiating, I do have Windows XP Pro on this machine (PIII 550) I could actually move 128MB from this one (as I really don't need 384mb) into it if I do buy it. So ram is really not a problem.

Really, its only the power switch, size of HDD, and PRICE off course! :D

Thanks anyway, could you give me a rough price I should be neogoiating for?

130313 2003-03-23 06:39:00 Sounds like a nice basic PC to me. - especially with a 17' monitor. I wouldn't worry about the power switch. You are better off leaving the box switched on, and turn the monitor off.

You could always negotiate the price if its a private sale, but $500 seems fair

130315 2003-03-23 07:20:00 I have just spoke to the seller, we agreeded on $450, but i want it less, since I'm looking at new case and hub too. What do you think, would it be polite of me asking $400, or am I wild :D) ~~~~~ s y ~~~~~ (2054)
130316 2003-03-23 07:24:00 Hi ~~~s y~~~,

130317 2003-03-23 07:59:00 Don't be a cheeky bugger SY. Go onto Trademe and see what crap you will get elsewhere for $450. Baldy (26)
130318 2003-03-23 10:46:00 Hi sy

haven't checked lately but, about $450- will get you a reasonable, new, upgrade box at trademe. If you have a keyboard, monitor and mouse already. Or hold of for a decent monitor untill your $$ improve. Incrementle upgrade is less painfull but needs to be well planned so you don't end up having to upgrade the components you just upgraded a few months back in order to fit your latest phase of the upgrade. Understand.

Cheers

PS. Check out that system carefully if/before you purchase. Find out what all the hardware is (make, model, version/revision, etc) then, ask back here about it if necessary. It could be maxed out as it is and may not be a whole lot better than your 550. Why is that switch brocken, someone been a bit testy with it??
