130407 2003-03-24 04:47:00 Hi - Ive been told that Windows XP has its own firewall. I have Wind XP Home. If so how do I know if its on or off ? Ladybug (3129)
130408 2003-03-24 05:13:00 Right click on the connected icon (the two little computers in the bottom right corner of the screen). Click Status. Click PRoperties. Go to the "Advanced" tab.

There should be something called "Internet Connection Firewall". Tick the box if you want to turn the firewall on, untick it if you want to turn it off.

130411 2003-03-24 07:11:00 Just some further information on XP's firewall; it only works one way i.e, it stops intrusions from the web site of things, but it does not stop programs on your PC dialling home willy-nilly.

If you are on dial up, your IP address is different each time you make an connection. This puts you at a very low risk of actually having an intrusion attempt on your PC from the web side of things. However, many programs on your PC regularly call home without you knowing about it. If you want to monitor which program is allowed to call home, you will need an independant firewall (not the inbuild XP one). Firewalls such as ZoneAlarm and Agnitums Outpost (both free) will keep track of all traffic to and from your PC. You can set the rules so that you can prevent certain programs ever calling home if you wish.

But, it is up to you whether you just want to use the XP firewall or use an independant program instead.

Just giving you another option and I hope this hasn't confused matters.

Jen :-)

130412 2003-03-24 07:23:00 Kerio is another free one that is good. BUT if you use one of these, make sure you turn off the XP one. Conflicts can arise! Pheonix (280)
130413 2003-03-24 13:55:00 Zone Alarm is excellent & free. Mzee (158)
