130365 2003-03-23 21:38:00 I have inherited a Toshiba Satellite Laptop that was reformatted by its previous owner. I have a recovery disk, but the CD/DVD Drive in the laptop does not work. I plan to replace this but would like to reintall the operating system in the meantime for internet use etc.

If I can get hold of an external drive how can I load the recovery disk from there? if so how do I get the computer recognise the new drive?

Laptop is approx 2years old, running Me, 6Gig hard drive, 128 Mb RAM d Celeron processor (not sure of grunt).

Would appreciate comments/help

130366 2003-03-23 22:30:00 cdrom normally is not bootable externally. they need to be internally.

maybe u install dos parition HDD wif a bootdisk. install like a basic windows system from discs. then u copy that cd onto the 2nd partition.
wipe c: use bootdisk to boot and run setup off D:

not entirely sure if recovery CD it can be run without booting thou...
alternatively u can use a normal windows cd copy to d: and run setup off the HDD.

130367 2003-03-24 04:10:00 If it is only two years old, wouldn't it still be under the Toshiba 3 year warranty? My 2year old second-hand Portege still has a year of warranty to run.

Or did 3 year warranties only apply to certain models, in which case I got lucky. :8}

Also, my (external) CD rom drive doesn't need drivers and relies on the OS. I wonder if you could boot with a floppy that provided CD access and run recovery from there with a borrowed CD-rom if yours is also external. Failing that could you boot with a floppy providing network access and run the recovery CD on another computer?

Cheers
