2003-03-23 05:35:00 | Thanks to those who responded to my previous post. More by luck than judgement I managed to get the modem working. After much trial and error I installed a driver: Generic SoftK56 and no one was more surprised than me when it worked - am writing this in IE V6 XP client. But, so far I have been unaable to silence the modem speaker. I have the slider in device manager/modem/speaker volume set to "off" - but it annoyingly persists. In earlier versions of Windows one could set to "off" when connected, or "off", but not this bird. I wonder if maybe the driver doesn't support volume control? Apart from that, just about every programme that I have reinstalled has required an update, and I'm only half way through. I tried the file transfer wizard on the Win 98 files, progs and settings, but it jammed at 89% compressed. One other thing that is puzzling me, is to get programmes (such as Eudora) to open automatically when XP opens. Start up seems rather different, but I guess I'll crack it eventually - probably find that it is easier than ever! :-) Again, many thanks...

2003-03-23 08:07:00 | Well done Sami! You have managed to find a modem driver that supports most of the functions of the modem chipset. To remove the noise from the modem speaker (actually a little piezo sounder) a dob of "blu tack" in the central hole, or unsolder it from the board will work. If the modem has a 3.5mm socket in the back (like a headphone socket on a walkman) then buy a blank plug from Dick Smith and leave it plugged in, it should disconnect the speaker sound. But do quit while you are ahead, if the modem works as a modem a work-around on the sound problem is the best option.

It's not an uncommon thing for the sound to still be there when using generic drivers. I just spent half an hour switching from Win98 to WinXP, sorting the modem driver out too as it wasn't detected by XP. Although I found the correct drivers by noting all the details like FCC code, Chipsets on the modem and anything else that'd help. I finally found what the modem was and who made it and what driver I could use on it. This was similar to my NIC problem with finding the manufacturer for an unknown card. Chips and numbers on your modem card can help you determine who makes your card and what drivers could work for it. |

2003-03-23 08:36:00 | Try going start-settings-control panel and double click Phone and modem options. Click on the modems tab at top. Double click your modem that is listed. Click the Advanced tab at the top. In the extra initialization commands box type in ATM1 and ok out of there. | Pheonix (280) | |
2003-03-23 19:07:00 | Thanks guys. Niether ATM1 nor ATM0 solved the problem. the infernal thing is still hissing at me! In the meantime, I'll try the solutions suggested by Godfather. | Sami (667) | |
2003-03-24 04:47:00 | In Win XP I shut my modem up by double-clicking on the two computers icon that are there when you are online, chose Properties>General>Configure>then removed the tick from "Enable Modem Speaker". OK all the way out. Apologies if you have already tried this. :-)

2003-03-24 06:13:00 | Thanks Susan, but I had already done that with no luck. I talked with the OEM this morning and as I thought, the problem lies with the generic driver. I've asked Roxio.com if they can suggest a driver that will enable the modem volume control function. Thanks for responding...

2003-03-24 07:20:00 | Hey Sami, do you have any info on the modem, like manufacturer, chipset type...anything? Tried going settings>control panel>Phone and modem>modems>properties>diagnostics>query modem and seeing what ATI1 to ATI7 tell you? | Pheonix (280) | |
2003-03-24 19:53:00 | Pheonix This is what it reveals - does it mean anything to you?: ATQ0V1E0 - OK AT+GMM - +GMM: SoftK56 AT+FCLASS=? - 0,1 AT#CLS=? - COMMAND NOT SUPPORTED AT+GCI? - +GCI: 7E AT+GCI=? - +GCI: (B5,0A,0F,20,26,2E,31,3C,3D,42,46,50,51,52,53,54,5 7,58,59,00,61,69,6C,73,7B,7E,82,89,8B,9C,9F,A0,A5, A6,FE,A9,B4,09) ATI1 - 255 ATI2 - OK ATI3 - SoftK56V_B2.1_V3.05.12.06 ATI4 - Generic SoftK56 ATI5 - 126 ATI6 - SoftK56 CModem Version 11 Rksample Version 341 ATI7 - 255 Thanks for that, I'll forward to the computer shop and ask if they can possibly find a compatible driver that will enable modem volume control.
