1307735 2012-10-20 03:41:00 Hi all

My 17 year old speakers are finally ending their useful life. It is a 5.1 set-up that I currently have set up in a dedicated room. I am looking to upgrade before baby number one arrives and I no longer have any disposable income.

I was initially looking at the B&W 683 seen here (www.bowers-wilkins.co.nz) then began asking myself if I could justify spending that much dosh now that I'm going to have other priorities.

So I then looked at their smaller sister here (www.bowers-wilkins.co.nz) which was a slightly better price (with the expected drop in quality).

Then I stumbled across the Mordaunt Short speakers and was wondering if anybody here has any experience with these. Initially I looked at the Carnival 8 which can be seen here (www.stereotype.co.nz) because they review well and the price is sharp. But now I'm considering the Aviano 8 which can be seen here (www.stereotype.co.nz) because I think they will suit my music tastes more (punk/hard rock/metal).

Does anybody here have any experience with the Mordaunt Short brand or in particular the Carnival 8 or Aviano 8 speakers?

Cheers.

1307736 2012-10-20 04:58:00 Seeing you may have a rugrat on the way,you might be best to look at wall mounted speakers.
When they get to the exploring stage, they may find your expensive floor speakers very interesting.

The only way I have found when selecting speakers is to see how they sound with the most common stuff I play/watch.
So take some of your favourite CDs and DVDs along to the shop and have a listen.

It will always be a trade off between price and quality.

Yes - unfortunately I like my floorstanders! Hopefully the grilles on each speaker are nice and solid!

I've heard the B&W - very nice. I haven't heard the Mordaunt Short so that would be buying on review and reputation.

Maybe i make sure i get a lotto ticket tonight.

Cheers.

Cheers.while MS are a good brand, I would NOT buy on reputation and review only. Speakers as you probably already know if spending half decent coin on a very subjective. Most shops will let you try in your own home before you buy. Conditions apply of course.

1307739 2012-10-20 06:29:00 I absolutely love my Mission M75's, not a surround setup at all just a pair of excellent quality floor speakers, also available as a wall variant gary67 (56)

The missus loves loud too. :punk

Thanks all for your suggestions. Ideally I would want to listen to those Mordaunt Shorts but I can't find any stockists closer than a 3 hour drive!

1307743 2012-10-22 03:41:00 Everything these days seems to be surround sound, but I don't think even the expensive ones sound as good as the old 2.0 systems when you are listening to rock music.
I am still a long way off justifying the purchase of a decent home theatre system for myself, but the day will come when I have fixed all the money hungry parts of my house & I can afford to upgrade my mini-system to something respectable.
