I am still a long way off justifying the purchase of a decent home theatre system for myself, but the day will come when I have fixed all the money hungry parts of my house & I can afford to upgrade my mini-system to something respectable.

Don't worry - the system goes straight onto 2 channel for music listening!

The 5.1 is good for movies and gaming though!

Might have to change the amp for one that only goes to 10.

Many home theatre 5.1 speaker sets don't perform as well for stereo music as a good pair of stereo speakers, but some are decent.

Myself I have a set of wharfdale diamond 9 series 5.1 speakers which I think are a great all round compromise for a reasonable price. They sound great with vocals and do a decent job of hard rock/ metal which is what mine mostly get used for aside from movies. The full size front speakers don't need the help of the subwoofer at all with music and it can be lived without for movies also. I bought mine cheap from a parrallel importer for just under $2k for the whole set, great deal at the time but not so great since compared to package deals. I think there are newer models around now.

A couple of observations from my point of View, the centre is the most important speaker for movies, the left and right for music. The rear speakers and sub just round out the experience and are not so critical. However I got smaller rear speakers and regretted it, they sound great but I ended up buying floorstands for them which made them more expensive than the full size floorstanders would have been and they are more easily knocked over also.

Ive seen alot of metal tweeters ruined by small fingers.

The other thing to consider is just how truly awesome do you want the rears to be ?? They are mainly for sound effects so really dont need to be good as the center(movies) or front LR(music)
You could consider spending more $$ on better front & centre speakers, and sacrifice the rear speaker quality (again, only really for effects on movies)

1307749 2012-10-23 07:53:00 +1 for the wharfedale diamond series. Traditionally I've found wharfedale to be kinda muddy as they tried to drive to much bass and forgot the tweeters but the diamonds are a good compromise, without the sub they sound awesome and trust me they get loud before you sense any distortion. Then if your in the mood for dubstep the sub will do a decent job of simulating earthquakes. I've had mine about 2 years, paid about $2200. Don't get the pioneer amp that is often packaged with them though. hueybot3000 (3646)
