1333171 2013-03-18 03:03:00 Hey all,

I have just completed a gaming build and am wanting to do an Overclock on my CPU (time to void warranties >:) ) my goal is to hit somewhere on/or between 4 and 5Ghz, system specs as follows

Gigabyte GA-78LMT-S2P Rev 5.1
AMD FX-4170 Quad Core @ 3.8Ghz
2 x 2GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3
CoolerMaster X6 Aftermarket CPU Cooler

Just wondering if anyone else has done a OC like this on a similar setup (I know the CPU can hit 5Ghz), just wanting to know if the motherboard will handle the OC or not and if my cooling will be sufficient enough (max CPU temp is 70c)

Cheers
Daffy

1333172 2013-03-18 03:05:00 Just to clarify a few things the system is a full tower, two 140mm fans and one 80mm fan daffyduckNZ (17019)
1333173 2013-03-18 03:07:00 You can only but try, you'll get a bsod if it's too unstable. Just don't stick the cpu voltage past 1.5v unless you know what you are doing. icow (15313)
1333174 2013-03-18 03:09:00 Looks like its been done before (www.tomshardware.com)so it may work. If you do it properly. Someones oc it to 5.1 (www.overclock.net) Speedy Gonzales (78)
1333175 2013-03-18 03:15:00 I've used an X6 on several CPUs - good up to about 4.5 - 4.6 on AM3 CPUs IMO. pablo d (15490)
1333176 2013-03-18 03:22:00 I plan to push it as high as possible without touching the voltages, once I hit the threshold ill start upping until I hit 1.5v depending on temps and stability ill continue to push it by small adjustments. daffyduckNZ (17019)
1333177 2013-03-18 03:54:00 That's if I don't hit 5Ghz first of course lol daffyduckNZ (17019)

1333179 2013-03-18 18:46:00 Results vary, I haven't played with AMD in a while but my 3570K doesn't hit expected overclocks anywhere near what people claim for it. Several threads/sites etc say 4.5 is basically guaranteed with a certain set of settings which you can then either lower the voltages etc to extend the life or start upping the clock speed until you hit the wall but in my case it won't even boot at 4.5 and is unstable down to 4.3, I have run it at both 4.2 and 4.1 stably for quite a while but mine doesn't want to go any higher without ridiculous voltages. It's not heat either, It's never gone above 65-70 at any setting I've tried under stress testing and wasn't any hotter at the settings that failed. On top of that my "DDR3 1600 XMP" RAM has to be clocked at 1333 or it's unstable - disappointing all round.

The whole point being yours may or may not hit 5Ghz and you should work your way up slowly to find it's max.

1333180 2013-03-18 19:49:00 i can hit 5ghz with my 152500k but that being said its not just about the CPU. Also since its a new setup I wouldn't suggest ramping it up to 5ghz to begin with. OCing a cpu its a lengthily process that usually results in the highest clock being really inefficient. Slankydudl (16687)
