1307644 2012-10-19 10:35:00 I've been trying now for 3 months . I thought that I retrained in accounting but I worked in the finance team doing the non-financial stuff, didn't thought it would be so hard and that NZ isn't as bad as the US or EU .

I worked mostly in public sector given I am in Welly . There is really just no jobs available . 20 per 3 weeks maybe, they have long lead in times . 16 of those are senior positions . 2 are admin and 2 are those related but some of them still ask for relevant experience . I am not looking at finc admin roles and take a sig pay cut . But it would seem strange that after 8yrs of working to say apply for office junior .

Got my CV looked at, paid for the service, now someone has advised me to do it again, may do that too . Got the WINZ thing after a month of looking . Once they seen my CV basically was told no follow up appointments would just be wasting my time, no courses . Here are the payments and good luck . .

I had one before where I worked with before too, went well I thought, they made jokes and they ensured my forms were filled out correctly and said it was ok when I was honest and said I have done such and such . . but I just completed my course . Guess that the other candidate was just stronger .

1307646 2012-10-19 11:18:00 You could maybe brush up on your written communication skills ... ;) fred_fish (15241)
1307647 2012-10-19 13:03:00 You think the finance sector is bad, try finding a job in the IT sector!! stu161204 (123)
1307648 2012-10-19 14:07:00 I'm of the opinion that if you have to take a bit of a pay cut and a job demotion, just to get your foot in the door, then that's infinitely better than sitting on the benefit doing nothing, so good on ya for keeping on with the hunt and trying :)

And yeah, a good CV makes a WORLD of difference. Was reviewing some candidates for a position available for the company I was working for earlier in the year and if the first page didn't catch us, with over 200 applying we just didn't even bother.

Same goes for spelling / grammar / punctuation / spacing on the opening letter / application email. Bonus brownie points if you ask about the job at hand too, and I always make a point of it when applying for jobs myself.
When applying for a job doing web design, you could ask them what kind of tools they prefer to use, if they use something such as dreamweaver, or if they code everything by hand in a plain text editor? Ask if they're predominantly windows-based or if they do development on linux machines with vi perhaps? Will you be working with specialist graphics designers or do they want you to do the artwork yourself? Anything that shows you've actually spent more than 5 seconds just skimming the title of the role. Those were the opening letters that caught my eye, and same goes for the other person who was reviewing the candidates too.

1307650 2012-10-19 19:00:00 Yes Chill. Even so, he's right, there are a lack of jobs. While there are jobs here and probably Wgtn too, there a lots of applicants for each. I've had the same comments, 100's applying.

Still persist Nomad, you just haven't found the right one, sooner or later, one will come along that like you and are happy with your experience. Although, yeah....you might have to go down a bit in pay initially.

I started at $38K at Web Drive, it did go up twice after that, but starting wages.....

1307651 2012-10-19 19:34:00 I guess Im lucky then...

Got told a month before Xmas last year that 23rd Dec our last day - company shutting down.
Week before Xmas (Friday) I threw a sickie and went into Temp agency. Got told they have job ready and waiting as parent company of employment had sent CVs through when redundancies first announced. Monday had interview. Tuesday (~22nd Dec) started new role. Had to work all days except stats over holidays but I didn't mind. 3 months later they signed me on. Oil industry - first timer

Keep looking .. and do check out the temp agencies too

1307652 2012-10-19 21:20:00 Nice Myth, good on ya.

Had a similar experience at the start of the year, found a job in about 5 hours, 3-month contract. It was supposed to go permanent, the company wasn't in the best financial stead at the time, but found a job again during my 1 week notice period at the end of those 3 months and had at least a job offer a day during that week too.

TradeMe lists over 11,000 jobs so there's certainly jobs out there :D

And are all 11,000 in your skill area? no.
If you have a specialist skill, great, less applicants.

Garden variety, general dogsbody skills - like me, lots of applicants.

Not that I'm complaining, at least I've had a few interviews....
