It's smbd that you want to start.

yes i did the "su" thing but still no positive results.

Gorela

Well smbd did something, now i just have to kick someone of Vanessa to see if Vanessa can see a directory in Sam with a file called "test" in it.

130585 2003-03-26 07:50:00 smbd.. for daemon.. must remember that for when smb doesnt work... ;-)

Like in Knoppix..
Must try that, coz then I can finally setup Knoppix with samba shares ;-)

BTW - Knoppix (The one on the PCW Cover Disc) comes with xfsamba, but I couldnt remember the name of Cluelesses proggy :-)

130588 2003-03-27 01:34:00 Update

I read alot of the documentation , and realised that i needed to have nmbd running as well. From what i can figure out "nmbd" is the "Hello doze, here i am." part of the process, and "samba" is the "This is what i'm sharing, and how." part of the process. So finally Vanessa (doze) can see that there is a computer called "Sam" on "Tux-net"

Unfortunatly Sam didn't seem to be actually seem to be sharing anything.

Then the magic trick, I used swat (Sam:901) to modify my setting from vanessa. I changed security, (which wasn't even on the actual .conf file) to "share" as suggested by Chill above. This added the line:

# Global parameters
[global]
workgroup = TUX-NET
netbios name = SAM
interfaces = eth0
security = SHARE
encrypt passwords = Yes

And we are away! Vanessa can see 2 shared folders in Sam
I can't get into the /home/(username) files, even though i can see my /home/(username) but i'm fine with that.
/inhouse is now shared, which was all i really wanted to do.

If i can do it anyone can!

130589 2003-03-27 01:48:00 Clueless,

Don't forget to disable swat on sam now you have it set up. Swat is a security hole and should only be enabled whenever you need to make an adjustment to the conf file. While you're playing with swat if you go to the last tab you can put in user names and passwords for your shares.

Helps with the access ;)

130590 2003-03-27 01:58:00 Thanks Gorela!

I just commented out this

#[homes]
# comment = Home Directories
# read only = No
# create mask = 0640
# directory mask = 0750
# browseable = No

So now it doesn't try unsuccesfully to share the /home/files. Perfect :)

I'll have a wee play later and see if i can get the /home/files working as they should, but for now there are other things to do that don't involve me being in front of this here screen.

Thanks to all who helped, and to wintertide, who put up with me all but taking over asking the questions on this thread.

130591 2003-04-02 22:48:00 Forgive me for raising the dead (again)

:D

There's one thing that i'm not happy with with this samba file-sharing bizo

"/homes" (No not Paul)

I would really like them to share properly now it would seem that there is no user freindly way of doing this. What i would idealy like is if someone could jump on Vanessa, and go to the /home files on Sam, and log in to access their stuff.

At the moment, i have it set up so that i have one readonly share that any user can access, and one stash area where anyone can dump whatever they like. There is nothing user specific.
