130763 2003-03-25 09:53:00 Go for the windows xp. I'm running it at the moment and have done for the past year. I wouldn't go back to anything else...especially not WinME that was the worst ever...crashed 6times a day!

I also run win2000 at Tec...but I find it kinda primitive and ugly looking. XP at least looks nice hehe. Besides you'll at least be up to date ;)

If you do go for XP I would probably go for fat32 formatting. Cos you can read/write to the windows partition from linux -if u ever use it. Also games compatibility..

Go for the XP/NTFS format or get win2000 if you have other people using your computer and you don't want them to be accessing some parts of your drive. It has the ability to stop them accessing it. Umm or you can put your important stuff in an encrpyted PGP disk.. haha miles better.

Does anyone know how to set permissions on fat32? like stop another user from accessing certain folders or whatever?? Is it even possible?

130764 2003-03-25 10:20:00 goto google and look up these items:
fprot keykey
(That'll take you to the vendors webpage of some software called FProt/File Protector)
Folder Guard
Id recommend the second if you can afford to pay, otherwise, FProt it free for trial :-)

130766 2003-03-25 12:19:00 I'm talking like NTFS permissions, you know right click, set security so that only you can access it, or only u have full control on it -not some limited user. Why doesn't that work with fat32???

I have tried folderguard and file protector programs...quite a few years back now. With FileProtector I noticed a considerable loss in system performance with protection enabled...stuff takes longer to load up etc.

With folderguard, I found it a little too primitive. Still is really. It only hides the stuff from 'windows'. Thats not too great, when you can mount the windows partition in linux and bamm..full access to the files.

PGP can encrypt specific files to 4096bits but the PGP disk program is awsome. Your files are encrypted to 256/256bit all the time. You decide the size of the disk..e.g 1gb and you can access everything in it like a drive because it mounts it onto a drive letter e.g Z. Password or key protected of course.

your computer should be perfectly fine with either 2k or xp . . . the choice is really up to you - do you want to be able to operate your pc as unrestricted as MS gets (shaddup nix boys ;)) or do you want an interface that treats you like a kindergarten child in an attempt to be helpful? Basically what I'm saying is - review yourself; do you consider yourself very capable with computers? in which case go 2k, OR do you consider yourself a newbie/n00b/beginner, where you can struggle with some tasks and find yourself often asking others for help? in which case xp could be the go, as it is more suited to beginners .

2k is defined as a business operating system - some knowledge/capability is assumed/expected

xp is defined as a personal operating system, the first based on the NT codebase - little knowledge/capability is assumed/expected . It's designed to make computing as easy as possible for "mom and pop" users, however its attempts to be helpful can be an annoying limitation for those who know what they are doing (sucks if you can fix a problem with say 3 mouseclicks but you are forced through a stupid XP wizard) . I feel that xp pro, the business release of xp, shouldnt come packed with all its patronising crap by default, because its a royal PITA to have to go to the effort configuring out all the annoyances . If you do go XP, you might want to give atomicxp a look .

As for IRQ's, google is your friend - it turned this up:
