130754 2003-03-25 07:59:00 Both or either one :D

For internet/jetstart it doesn't really matter what OS you have.

For games and music I think you should be more concerned about the hardware aspect, not operating system software.

130755 2003-03-25 08:05:00 In a nutshell,

Windows 2000 = More stable, proven and "match hardened"
Windows XP = Easier to use, better hardware support and looks prettier.

130756 2003-03-25 09:15:00 If its games you're after, Id suggest using XP, with Direct X 9, its for me so much better performance with the Family PC's Graphics than I could get anywhere else!

I'd say use Win2K if you're wanting it to stay up for longer... but XP should be fine :-)

130757 2003-03-25 09:23:00 Agree with above except that I hear a lot of games do not work if you choose NTFS on install rather than FAT32. Pheonix (280)
130758 2003-03-25 09:32:00 No, Not really.

Disk utilities (Real old ones) may not work, but otherwise, NTFS is great!

Only down side is that its not MS-DOS readable.. but that's all fixed with a Knoppix CD should windows die for some weird reason.

No, I use NTFS on all PC's that I know I wont be installing Linux on, simply coz Linux only supports FAT32 in R/W mode.

NTFS has a lot of added security too, Id recommend it actually :-)

130759 2003-03-25 09:33:00 Hi,

Both are good, although I tend to find when using the Internet a hassle using XP as with using 2000.

Personally, I greatly prefer more 2000 for Internet and Jetstart

As for XP, I find it really handy for 'entertainment' - games, music, etc..

Overall, if you want to know all the entricies of both these systems, then 2000 is a good base. XP has accumulate no of extras, if this suits you more.

Just note that XP has still got a long way to go yet for fixes, so just keep that in mind. Only SPK1 now, still 2 more to catch up with the rest...

Seeing as XP is built on 2000 which is built on NT then XP is the better choice. Now if you take into account service packs you may have a point.

However XP certainly if you want to go for games. Have only found 1 that would not work and that was so old it was probably better to turf it.

Looking prettier? Well any desktop can be made to look like any other.

Hardware: Both 2k and xp are very similar in terms of driver support (basically inter-compatible *most* of the time) however xp has a habit of throwing as many components onto as few irq's etc as possible, which can decrease stability. As a side note I recommend 384meg or above, 512 preferably, for both 2k and xp. You'll notice the difference, trust me ;)

Software: XP is pretty much 2k with a fancy fisher-price GUI and a lot of "helpful" (read: restrictive/inhibiting and patronising) applications tacked onto it. If you dont have the latest greatest hardware out there, then the extra overheads of XP can decrease your gaming performance (more bloat == less performance.) Also on the software note - XP is slightly better for compatibility of older DOS games, however 2k does have a compatibility layer installed with the service packs.

Bottom line - if you have the latest hardware and play the latest games - you probably wont notice much difference. if you have older hardware and play the latest games - 2k would be your best bet. if you have either the latest hardware or older hardware and still play your old DOS classics, then go XP.

Internet - equal

jetstart - this is a connection that your OS is (or should be) independant of. By that i mean its irrelevant if you are using win9x, Nt4, os2, 2k, xp, linux, whatever... I guess drivers for a PCI dsl modem could be a factor but as I said earlier, drivers are fairly interchangeable between 2k and xp

music - exactly the same, but drivers for soundcards could be a factor. If you have an older soundcard or a more exotic one (aureal vortex anyone?) then xp will be better for out-of-the-box hardware support. Dont forget about XP throwing as much hardware onto as few irq's as possible though...

hope this helps

When it comes down to it, I think its whatever you feel like using in the morning :p
