130744 2003-03-25 06:46:00 Im running Redhat 7 (got it with "Linux for Dummies") and when I start up it asks for my username and pasword, get past that, but I dont know what to do next, I have the desktops KDE, GNOME, and Games... how do I load these. Linux for dummies doesnt tell me

I know this is a simple matter but I just honestly dont know what to do next.

130745 2003-03-25 06:51:00 Type "startx". That will get the X-window server running. If you're lucky, that will bring up Gnome or KDE. Graham L (2)
130746 2003-03-25 09:17:00 I have no updated to 7.2 and I tried "startx" but it doesn't work, is there a different line for 7.2? 404error (3327)
130747 2003-03-25 09:33:00 you'll need to type this:
su -
to become root user, and then type:
init 5
Runlevel 5 is the GUI level, before that you're likely on Runlevel 3.

init 6 will reboot
init 0 will shutdown (Halt as Linux calls it :-))

130748 2003-03-25 10:33:00 That didnt work too well, it started starting programs but when it got to wine it said "failed" in big red lettering (well maybe no big but certainly red)

may the 404 be with you

130749 2003-03-25 10:40:00 That just means it couldnt start that particular service.

Did it continue (It should have)

130750 2003-03-25 11:09:00 Maybe this time ill just leave it :D 404error (3327)
130751 2003-03-26 03:29:00 Did you actually install the X Window system? You can't run GUIs without it. It should have asked for your monitor type, and check that it worked. The fact that your system starts in the black screen mode suggests that you didn't install it. (I'm pretty sure that my RH7.2 started by default in Gnome, and I had to turn that off myself. :D Graham L (2)
130752 2003-03-26 05:45:00 I would recommend waiting for Red Hat 9 to come out. It'll be out in a week or two - looks very flash so far :) www.osnews.com segfault (655)
