131042 2003-03-26 09:37:00 My friend is getting a new computer
this motherboard was chosen
www.chaintech.com.tw

since i don't know much about hardware
can someone help me to decide if this is good or not
money is not a problem here

he needs a computer that can do some simple video and graphic editing
and play some games
a new graphic card could be considered but will it's onboard graphics good enough?

sound is not a big problem
just be able to play will do

131043 2003-03-26 09:43:00 if money isnt a problem, you'll probably want to look at one of the nForce2 options from Asus, Abit or Epox before Chaintech. Nothing personal against Chaintech, their products are ok, just not as good as the others I just mentioned. I do have a huge problem with the NZ distributor of chaintech products though... but thats another story altogether whetu (237)
131044 2003-03-26 10:23:00 If money is no problem, why not consider an Intel Pentium system?

I've built another system using a Gigabyte 8INXP (www.digital-daily.com) board.

Simple games should require a decent graphics card... given that the Geforce FX range of cards are being released shortly, it will become a much cheaper option to have a look at the older Geforce 4 ti 8X range of cards.

131045 2003-03-26 11:03:00 was thinking along the line of sticking to this motherboard though

what i meant was the componets and certain things like the ATA or the RAM or the intergrated parts

any more commments will be very welcome

131046 2003-03-26 12:33:00 Board looks reasonable. Onboard isn't the greatest. I've had too many people complaining that their onboard devices (video, audio and lan) have crapped out but this is usually after a few months or even years.

It's a small board, trouble putting in RAM if trying to upgrade without removing the cables blocking the way and possibly having to get under the internal drive metal casing. A few PCI slots but that's ok since it's accomplished by putting most things onboard.

Didn't see how many ATA/RAID controllers were on it but 2 is standard, also didn't see USB or other ports, sorry wasn't looking that hard at it... just a quick glimpse.

131047 2003-03-26 12:50:00 Looking at the features listed it looks like it would be quite good. The board would be capable of running AMD's latest Duron, Athlon and Athlon XP CPUs. It also will run any of the current range of DDR memory. Just remember that no motherboards support more than two sticks of 2700 or 3200 RAM.

It appears to have most of the bells and whistles including the nVidia chipset. As the onboard video is meant to be GF4 and can share 128Mb of RAM it should be reasonably capable of running most games available now. If your mate wants to run say Doom III he would need to get a seperate video card.

131048 2003-03-26 23:56:00 Its a little micro-atx board.

131049 2003-03-27 01:26:00 I would think chaintech is a budget pc mainboard maker.
your money will be well spent, if u choose:

intel P4 3.xx GHZ and upwards,
Asus mainboards based on intel chipsets like the P4G8X Deluxe with onboard everything including firewire/sata.
1G DDR memory
ASUS V9900 Ultra GeForce FX 5800 takes care of your video or ATI 9700 pro.

131050 2003-03-27 03:07:00 my $0.02 worth.

chaintech.....PC company used to use them. they use ecs now (who aren't to bad for a budget manafacture.) enough said ;-)

ASUS are good but costly.
There are heaps of good middle of the road manafactures out there. eg fic, dfi, soltek, abit, gigabyte, msi. i would certianly would pick any of those over chaintech anyday.

131051 2003-03-27 05:45:00 i know ASUS is a big company and makes good motherboards...
but what i dont' get is what is the actual advantage of having as ASUS motherboard than a chaintech motherboard or other brands?
are the other brands including chaintech have less features or less are they reliable?
