2003-04-26 10:36:00 | Hi Misty, i had a look at the quick guide manual for your modem Was there an option to enter your Xtra username and password? You don't mention that in your last post. I downloaded your manual and the way I see it there should be: IP address entered in browser = 192.168.1.2, then username = admin and password = password, then configuration, Wan. Scroll to Service name, then PPP then type in ISP name, eg XTRA. Enter the username =yourusername.xadsl@xtra.co.nz and the password supplied by Xtra then submit. You should then click on configuration and enter DNS details. There should be two instances where you enter username and password. One will be the default one for the modem which is 'admin' & 'password' and the 2nd time the xtra username and password. sam m

2003-04-27 03:37:00 | Thanks for your comments sam m That's what I have done again to be sure. One comment you made has made me perplexed though - you say "the password supplied by Xtra. When I have put in my username.xadsl@ etc then I put in the password I have chosen, which is the one Xtra has on the system. Presume that is what you are referring to ? The one area I was not sure about is the "disconnect timeout" field. It shows as zero and I have changed to 10. Perhaps I should not do that - perhaps it should be left as 0, or maybe it does not matter much ? I have not got a connection as yet. The router is showing a steady red light for power. A blinking red light for ready and a blinking yellow (or some colour like that) for ADSL. The blinking light for ADSL blinks six times, nothing for three beats, then another six blinks etc.

If it isn't getting that far all the usernames and passwords in the world aren't getting any further. If your modem has a web interface or any sort of software specification, it should differentiate between the ADSL link and the PPP connection. If the modem isn't getting an ADSL link which is what it sounds like, then it will never get a PPP connection and therefore never transfer data. I haven't read the entire thread yet, am probably going to go do that now... |

Sorry I just have to reply to this... Where in the hell did you get your uninformed information from?? Xtra for one had nothing to do with the installation of telephone lines, or DSL, or fibre or anything. Xtra are nothing more than a money making puppet developed by Telecom, providing poor service, sluggish dial-up and limited DSL, whilst getting huge price breaks from Telecom. When Xtra hit the market they were selling their internet time for less than most ISP's could buy it due to Telecom price-breaking for them. Telecom would not have "wired the country" with Copper, Fibre or any other type of cabling - this was all done when Telecom was a (read carefully) GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENT. Yes that's right ladies and gentlemen, it was not out of the goodness of Telecom's heart to run copper wire around the country, it was a result of Tax-Payer money. WE paid for the copper wire, Telecom was then sold for a ridiculously cheap price to an off-shore entity. Sure they might maintain the wires, but that is charged on top of our line rental as well so they aren't doing anything for free. Incidentally as it stands there are other companies starting to break into the market running lines through ChristChurch and Wellington are TelstraClear and they are providing a damned site better service than Telecom, and incidentally a cheaper service. So much so that Telecom decreased their line rental in the Wellington region to match TelstraClear's better prices. Please be more informed when posting unhindered support for companies when it seems you know little of the real situation. |

2003-04-27 04:29:00 | Hi Misty The password supplied by Xtra for your previous dial up account may or may not be the same for the jetstream account. It would pay to call Xtra and confirm your password just to eliminate the possibility you are entering the wrong one it. The disconnect time out field should be left on 0. The default is 0 which means never disconnect from the ISP. Have you entered your DNS settings yet? Xtra DNS settings are: Primary DNS 202.27.184.3 Secondary DNS 202.27.184.5 Cheers Jen

2003-04-27 04:40:00 | Re your comments about the PC not rebooting after you have saved your configuration details. Your actual PC does not need to reboot. Looking at your user manual for the modem, it says to Click on Save Settings under the Configuration section on the left hand side of the page. Then you click on the Submit button. After a minute refresh the browser page and your new details should appear. | Jen C (20) | |
2003-04-27 09:13:00 | Hi Jen C You are right in that the password for my previous dial up account and my jetstream a\c are different. However the new password has been checked by Xtra more than once at their end. I have definitely got it memorised and it is working ! The disconnect time field should be left on 0. I will go in and change that back. Yes, I have entered my DNS settings - that was pretty straightforward. I will read your next set of comments now and mull over them. thanks :)

2003-04-27 09:32:00 | Hi again Jen C Yes, after I have submitted it says that the router has successfully rebooted and the page refreshes itself to the settings. I have reverted the "disconnect timeout" to 0. The router "ready" and ADSL are still flashing however !

2003-04-27 09:41:00 | Misty, if your modem is indicating that it has not got the ADSL signal, you will not succeed in getting a connection. My ADSL router/modem (Alcatel) showed a connection signal as soon as ADSL was enabled by Telecom, and before I configured my router/modem at all. In mine, the LED was flashing constantly, and only went solid "on" when the ADSL was connected. Please confirm that your modem is showing that an ADSL signal has been detected. If it is not showing that, configuring it will be unlikely to help.

2003-04-27 10:48:00 | I know how frustrating it is Misty. My 1st ADSL modem was faulty. As Godfather says, it should pick up the ADSL signal. Can you confirm that there is no filter on the ADSL line. | wotz (335) | |
