2003-04-22 23:41:00 | Geez I just noticed that this was started about a month ago - must be all fixed by now! *oops* | Greg S (201) | |
2003-04-24 22:24:00 | I am now consistently getting error 629. Have spoken with guy from Dynalink. He suggests: (1) that I change the the setting G.DMT to Multimode. Doing that will mean there is less searching. Have done but it has not fixed the overall problem. (2) Ask Telecom to "strengthen the head end". I will do that. (3) Ask Telecom to confirm that there is a good DB signal (ie not over 50) (4) If all that fails to go back to Noel Leemings and ask how much it would be to swap to a RTA220 router. I will go through that process unless anyone has better ideas. Dynalink guy seemed the most knowledgeable of all the people I have talked to (outside this forum !). :D Funny thing is that Dynalink guy and Telecom\Xtra both have differing opinions on error 629. The former say that shows that the problem is that the ISP has dropped off the link, whilst the latter say that it indicates a modem problem. How can that be - it must be documented as one or the other ? ?:|

2003-04-25 00:07:00 | Actually others have installed fibre optic lines around the country but they are unlikely to install copper lines throughout the country when it is already there. | mikebartnz (21) | |
2003-04-25 05:23:00 | Thanks Greg S. I have tried going to the first website you gave but it said not available. I went to the second and it tried to sell me PC Booster ! Nevetheless, I did find out that DUNS error 629 means "this port was disconnected by the remote machine". Dynalink say that the remote machine is Xtra. Telecom\Xtra say the remote machine is the modem. :D Can some independent expert tell me please - what is the remote machine ? There is also mention made of using Hyperterminal to see any error response from the server. I will need to read a bit more on this. :| Thanks for your offer of coming to visit but I live on the North Shore.

2003-04-26 06:52:00 | I have now changed my external modem for a DSE router. In configuring it I am asked to "in my web brouser, enter the router's default IP address" - how do I do that please ? When I go to my web brouser there does not seem to be an opportunity to enter anything different from my user ID and password. :|

2003-04-26 06:58:00 | Your instruction manual (might be on the CD as a Adobe file) should give the routers default IP address. It may be something like this 192.168.1.1. You enter that address into you internet explorer address bar. This will give you access to your modems configuration settings, and the place to enter your user ID and password. What is the brand and model number of the new external modem? Jen

2003-04-26 08:11:00 | Thanks Jen C - I put in the IP address in the Address of IE6 and got to the location which was given. I put in the settings by chosing WAN first and that worked Ok. Then I chose DNS as specified and entered the primary and secondary numbers for Xtra as given, then submitted. It seemed to be handling that Ok - but then I got the message that the next page could not be displayed. The PC was supposed to re-boot at that point - but it did not ! The DSE Router is XH7916.
