131091 2003-03-27 01:21:00 DNS is the server that resolves website names e.g. www.pressf1.co.nz to the IP number (you should be able to get to pressf1 by http://210.48.10045 ).

If the DNS isn't working correctly you'll get a DNS error in your web browser.

My DNS is set on my Network Card. There's the IP for your Network, Gateway and then below that is the DNS settings. Basically every webpage is an IP, DNS helps you convert the address to the IP.

131093 2003-03-27 01:25:00 PoWa, Xtra is still good as it's unlimited National Traffic at no cost. Para converts National at 0.02 of international which isn't that much but still amounts to your Equivalent at the end of it all.

IHug is just the same, but 10gigs international and unlimited national. That's about 34.95 + Telecom charges.

131094 2003-03-27 01:29:00 Just to fix up what I said about G.Lite... don't use it if you've got a connection greater than 512Kbits. It's capped at that limit and that's why it's suitable to use it for 128Kbit connections. Kame (312)
131095 2003-03-27 02:36:00 Arghhh .... people hammering Telecom/Xtra really gets my goat - same as people hammering Microsoft. X-( I don't see other companies running out and installing their own cable/fibre/DSL/copper lines all over the country.

Anyway, my pick is the modem. Take it back, get a replacement.

131096 2003-03-27 08:18:00 I detect a Microserf luser ;) PoWa (203)
131097 2003-03-27 08:31:00 Kidding really :)

Anyway lets do the math on Paradise JetStart.

Effectively you could download/upload 20Gigs of national traffic and only get charged for downloading 2GB. That leaves you with still 8GB to go till you start getting charged for excess usage.

20Gb National + 8Gb International = 10Gb charged = only $30

Which is flippin huge! Honestly who needs that much national traffic anyway, NZ has hardly anything worthwhile to download that is very huge. You can't really download divx movies from NZ or anything? If you can I'm listening :)

Xtra just doesn't stack up for all the XtraMoney you have to pay. Ihug has been said to be slow by quite a number of people.

Ihug/Xtra may have benefits for people wanting to run a NZ server or something, but is that what misty wants???

I'm pretty sure Misty only wants his ADSL modem to work correctly, not a new ISP.

Misty: Did you get any joy out of Dynalink Support?

You are dead right - I only want the ADSL to work correctly ...

However, poWa, I did do my homework and for a start there is no connection fee with Xtra till the end of March (ie save $99).

Also:
In the deal that I am on I pay $99-95 a month, which includes my phone rental, jetstream starter and my internet connection.

Plus: No joining fee for Xtra !!!

Plus: Reduced cost of call waiting from $3-95 to $2-50.

I costed out a savings of $6 a month over Paradise (not a fortune !)
but
my email is virus checked.

Anyway I am going back to Noel Leeming with the ADSL modem and try another. Many thanks to all of you for your comments, .....even poWa....
Will let you know how I get on.

131100 2003-03-27 09:16:00 Hiya Misty

I hope, for your sake, that the modem is faulty as mine was, good luck!

I know how frustrating it is.

J.
:D

as an aside however, the free joining of jetstream (usually $99) is regardless of your isp, as Telecom (not Xtra) arranges this ;-)
