2003-03-26 10:12:00 | I have Windows ME and on Frid 14 March joined the Xtra Jetstream starter package with Xtra as ISP (formerly was Paradise and still have as dial-up till all going smoothly). Since then I have had constant problems. It now seems (if I have confidence in what Xtra say) that the constant state where in the early stages I went from no signal to training to data was a "problem they are trying to correct" the real problem that I, in particular have, they say, is a modem which may be faulty. Now this modem is a Dynalink external ADSL model ALE070 and is the one which Xtra recommend for the "starter" package. Today when I now get a constant "data" signal, when I try to connect i get the message numbered 650, which says amongst other things "your server type setting might be incorrect. Contact your ISP". I did that and Xtra say that a 650 problem is a modem problem. How then did I manage to get intermittent earlier connections at the beginning ? Do I go back and exchange the modem ? Xtra have not given me great confidence so far. However I must admit that they have got Telecom to check the line and it is fine. Dynalink said it might be the distance from an exchange however it cannot be that as I live in Glenfield, North Shore. They also said that some people were not getting IP addresses but Xtra say that yes, I have a dynamic IP address which changes number every time I connect. Help please ! ?:| :(

2003-03-26 10:28:00 | Also xtra did suggest that I uninstall the modem driver and re-install, which I did and no change. Still, it was worth trying. Maybe I am too hard on xtra ! :|

However I must admit that they have got Telecom to check the line and it is fine." which is just typical of xtra - blameshift. my old man is a "telecommunications/data engineer" (pc name for phoneguy) and xtra are among the worst at this - they almost instantly push the blame to the phoneline... sure it keeps my old man and his workmates employed but its a PITA to test the line, find its fine and then be met with "but the (highly technically qualified) xtra helpdesk guy said it was the line! the line MUST be at fault!!!" anyway, almost ANY reputable isp will get telecom or a contractor to check your line. Try getting your modem replaced, and if that fails, try another ISP... you'll have a far better time with Ihug (stable, not so fast ~12k downloads average) or Inspire (not as stable as ihug but fairly stable, and reasonably fast ~16k average), both have really good helpdesks and 10gig international caps which certainly beat xtra's 5gig cap apart from that the only other suggestion would be manually configuring your router, which can be quite a daunting task if you dont know what you are doing also take a look at this site: www.nzdsl.co.nz good luck |

2003-03-26 10:45:00 | Did the modem ever work in the past? Is the line filter connected between the modem and jackpoint? Are you working of a spliter or a conventional jackpoint (ie did Telecom sent a person to install a specialised jackpoint?) and Go here (www.dynalink.co.nz) and look up Error 650 and configure the modem parameters - specifically the VCI setting

2003-03-26 10:49:00 | Error 650 suggests its a setting in the modem. Full details are here (www.dynalink.com.au) on the Dynalink website. The error may be an inconsistency between your modem settings and Xtra's requirements, but its a puzzle if it worked intermittently. Even though its an external modem, its a USB connected one so you dont get the advantage of always leaving it on, as you do with an external router modem. Contact Dynalink support, I believe they are quite good.

2003-03-26 10:53:00 | Hi Merlin The modem is brand new and when I started everything on 14 March everything worked intermittently. I am wondering re your comment about the filter between the modem and jackpoint. I thought that you only used filters on your phone connections ?

2003-03-26 10:55:00 | You may need to reinstall the drivers and check the driver configuration is specific to your Operating System . You will also need to check that the protocol is supported by the ADSL provider (Jet Stream) I have a Nokia Ni200, no problems, although it is internal . Check all of your wiring connections and cables for damage between the splicer unit and your PC terminal and telephone(s) . I suspect that the modulation is being disrupted, this will in effect cause you to experience corrupt data transfer and prompt the error message .

2003-03-26 11:00:00 | Experience says that Dynalink modems usually come with an inline filter. Check the modem configuration first though

( I am with them ;)) If you thinking of changing ISP, have a look here: www.netguide.co.nz **Note to self :D, I need to build a page which list all the ISP which have ADSL & list other info to do with ADSL ;))** |

2003-03-26 11:22:00 | The configuration is all correct. It does say to use Multimode (or G.DMT) and I am showing G.DMT. Also, the CD says "connect the LINE port of the modem into your ADSL jackpoint (telephone wall socket) into the line cord provided (never connect through a microfilter). ?:|
