| 131023 | 2003-03-26 08:06:00 | I can use a 277MHz (Cyrix) box with 96MB RAM and a 2.5GB HDD, or a 500MHz (AMD) mobo with 96MB RAM (can add more), and can add a HDD to it easily. Considering I want 15 computers connected to the game server at a time, would Linux or Windows be better? I've read that Linux is better for games because it doesn't require so much resources. And to save having to download the Linux versions of the game server executables, could I just use WINE (I'm sure it's free) and have the Windows versions of the game servers running under that? Or would I be better off downloading the Linux versions. |

Wine comes bundled with most linux distros. Go to their site (http://www.winehq.org) to see if anyone has had any success with the games you have in mind. The database is pretty good and the people will say what system and linux they used and also how successful they were. I would seriously doubt that you would be able to obtain "free" copies of commercial games using linux. Commerce is commerce. |

Perhaps also newer games - I've got a Warcraft III server. Any newer games can be hosted on peoples own computers. I've also got B1942 server, but... sounds like it wouldn't run well. |

It should be able to survive on the likes of CS, if you install and NT-Based system (2K would be best) and set the thread priority as High (Not Real-Time though, as that usually reduces the system stability a LOT). Ive had a DoD server running on a 500Mhz with 256MB RAM with 8 players and about 12 bots, and it was fine :-) That was a dedicated server thou. |
