131472 2003-03-28 00:47:00 Symptoms: the previous time I shut my computer down it hung on the "it's now safe to turn your computer off" message. Usually it turns itself off. In the end I had to switch it off at the wall. When I try to turn it on again nothing happens. I suspect a power supply problem. Dean (3194)
131473 2003-03-28 01:10:00 You should be able to hear the harddrive & the fans spinning? if not the it sounds like the power supply or the switch on the front of case.

131474 2003-03-28 02:19:00 Try this:
unplug power cord from back of PC
Press power button on PC to drain any excess power
Wait about 10 seconds and plug power cord back in.
Press power button and see what happens.

131475 2003-03-28 02:49:00 Can't hear a thing. It's definitely a power supply problem, or hopefully just a problem with the power switch. I assume it's possible to just replace the switch? Dean (3194)

Doesn't seem to work, but could be the right idea though, because I had this same problem as I've outlined a while back also. That time I left the computer unplugged sitting on the floor for a couple of days having just about lost hope. But when I decided to give it one more go before taking it in for repairs it miraculously started up again. The same trick hasn't worked this time, yet.

131477 2003-03-28 03:03:00 yes you should be able to replace the switch ok.
Silly question but have you tryed another appliance in the wall socket where you have your PC plugged in?

cheers Steve

131478 2003-03-28 03:06:00 It's unlikely to be the switch (famous last words :) ). That switch doesnt switch any power, its just a connection to the motherboard, and when activated the motherboard sends a signal to the power supply, "ok, fire up now".
So it could be the power supply has failed, quietly and silently without smoke, or the m/b is faulty, or the connection from the switch to the m/b have come adrift, or as you say the switch is not working. If you take the case off and trace the switch connection back to the mother board you could probably jury rig a temporary switch or connection to see if you can get a boot up.

131479 2003-03-28 03:08:00 Steve just jogged my memory, someone had a similar problem, and it was a faulty multiway power board. Terry Porritt (14)
131480 2003-03-28 06:25:00 I just hold my start button for 5 seconds , what O/S are you using ? kiwibeat (304)
131481 2003-03-28 07:16:00 Ahhh, if I read you correctly, this is not the first time this has occurred with the same computer. Therefore it may well not be the power supply but a defective/faulty connection somewhere.

Try this, trace back from the case power switch to the motherboard, there will be a two pin connector, connecting the switch to the motherboard. Note, on a piece of paper where this plug goes to on the MB, pull it off, straight up.

You now need to short out the two pins on the MB, a jumper is best and for this test just "borrow" one from the MB, BUT note well where you got it from, as it will eventually need to be replaced to exactly where you got it .

With the two pins now shorted together on the MB, fire the machine up.

If it now starts to boot or you hear disk drives reving up, switch the machine off as you have isolated either a poor electrical connection or a defective switch and not the power supply.

Before doing any of this, switch off the power at the wall, but leave the plug in. You should be able to do all of the above with one hand so with the other hold onto a bare metal part of the chassis to allow any static electricity to drain away to earth and therefore not damage any components.

Hope it helps, but because it is not the first time it has happened, I doubt that the PS has failed. BUT have been proved wrong before!!
