132015 2003-03-29 22:22:00 A friend of mine wants to password protect folders on his WinME computer. What programs have people used, and would they recommend them? somebody (208)
132016 2003-03-30 01:57:00 Hi,

I probably recommend PGP, as its good to use on most O.S. systems. You can go down here:

www.pgp.com

for protecting files+ encryption. Not necessary useful for password protecting folders, but is good for files.

I can't recollect at this time of a program to use for password protecting folders...

Hope this helps

132017 2003-03-30 02:27:00 Drive-crypt.

it lets you make a big file Eg 1Gb and use it like a drive. all info is encrypted on the fly.

costs dollars but i think there is a free 30 day demo.

132018 2003-03-30 02:37:00 Anything I don't want others to find eg: my kids, I just make as a hidden file.

I don't think theres an option in WinME to enable password protect.

132019 2003-03-30 02:48:00 Winzip's the program to use. Zips files or folders with or wothout passwords. John W (523)
132020 2003-03-30 03:44:00 It's not easy. WinME has no pretence of being secure. Making a passworded ZIP archive, then deleting the original is about the easiest. Of course, cleaning out the Recycle Bin (or some more effective file deletion) is needed. And there are cracking programmes to open up passworded Zip archives. :D

You can protect against "honest people" by locking the computer away physically.
