131835 2003-03-29 01:22:00 Will be building up a computer for friends that live in a rural location.
What is the best modem for noisy lines?
Dynalink ISA internal hardware or PCI winmodem?

131836 2003-03-29 01:30:00 If they have noisy phone lines (electric fences etc) and/or a along distance from the exchange, then the best option is the Dynalink external Rural modem II - see their website www.dynalink.co.nz/ ionic (3474)
131837 2003-03-29 01:39:00 I have a friend out in the "sticks" with some experience. He was originally set up with a win-modem and was able to achieve (on a good day) about 1.5kb/s on download. Perchance that he was able to obtain a Dynalink Rural modem which he installed. Now he is overjoyed, in that on a good day he can get 2.5kb/s . ( He is pi**ed at me in town getting 5kb/s :) ) Pheonix (280)
131838 2003-03-29 02:42:00 p.s. if you can't easily locate a dynalink rural modem, plse email me. ionic (3474)
131839 2003-03-29 04:13:00 I am aware that the rural modem would be best, but I already have an ISA and a winmodem here ready to go... rmcb (164)
131840 2003-03-29 09:03:00 the isa will be the better. true hardwaremodems tend to handle bad lines better than most winmodems. tweak'e (174)
131841 2003-03-29 11:08:00 yep definately go with the isa (true modem) over the winmodem I used to have an isa modem in my old pc and while connect speed was lower than winmodem it was very stable with few disconnections. cronik (3375)
