132309 2003-03-31 00:07:00 hey,

what is the diff between model 4 and 5??
also, are these seagate's reliable from your experience??

it will be used on primary channel as one drive only.
2nd drive on 2nd channel with the CD/DVD ROM.

the 80GB ATA 100 ones. wanna use for a while since 80GB should be plenty as I do only v minor comp graphics etc.. and doh store CDs on HDD. i hope to migrate this onto my new comp in 12 months time. am staying away from Serial ATA at the moment for obvious reasons.

these are neatly priced on www.pricespy.co.nz

Cheers,

132310 2003-03-31 00:30:00 I haven't come across many problems with Barracudda Drives, I think they are reliable but they tend to be somewhat slower than other drives (in microseconds of course) but that's no downer, I'd recommend their drives and the price is in a good range.

Most of the computers I have running here have probably a Seagate Barracudda in them and I haven't had any problems with them at all. I'm not sure what the series numbers mean but I've got a 3 and 5 that are both 30Gigs (the rounded up to gig number) but the 5 has probably 500MB more than the series 3, I just think it's probably a more improved drive, just like a version number.

132312 2003-03-31 03:50:00 I thought there were issues with the early Seagate Barracuda IV's?? Lohsing (219)
132313 2003-03-31 04:00:00 if i remember maybe someone posted something about booting up a Seagate IV on a type of mobo. they were working around like bios flashes and diff drives combinations on the dual channels etc etc...

i am hoping it will not affect me. am using it on a P200 only ATA 33 bus. single drive master on primary. 2nd hdd and cdrom on 2nd channel. i am hoping this can be transferred onto a P4 or AMD XP with no problems. Again as master drive on one channel.

132314 2003-03-31 04:15:00 I have 3 Baracudda's and they have not missed a beat yet and are very fast as well. Of course these are the 7200 RMP not the 5400 RPM models. Big John (551)
132315 2003-03-31 04:18:00 The problem with older versions of the BIOS may not be able to support the full capacity of the drive. You may need to upgrade your BIOS before attempting to use your Hard Drive because it may only allow a Max of 8GB, there are overlay software that can be supplied with the drive or else you can download it off Seagate's website that'll let you use the full capacity.

The problem they would be experiencing is that if you've installed your hard drive it would expect to use LBA mode as default, not Large or the Normal one, but because the BIOS is old it may only support Large and Normal while the newer BIOS would support and use LBA as default because it's the recommended one for drives. The newer BIOS however can support the older modes, so if you get the drive working under Large and it supports the full capacity of your drive then you can use your other computer to use Large as well and that should work when transferring the drive between PCs. Just remember when autodetecting the drive that you choose the same mode that the BIOS uses when transferring it to the other PCs. All these settings is found in your Hard Drive section of your BIOS.

no, you're probably thinking of either the cuda III's OR the raid problem that the early IV's had - substandard performance, which Seagate quickly fixed (just a firmware update basically) and replaced any drives for the cost of posting them your drives. For normal use however, the cuda IV's had no other major problems.

Seagate has always been my choice, I've seen a few Maxtor's die... which is a shame because I was considering giving them a shot. I never quite liked IBM drives, and have always despised Quantum. I cant comment on Western Digital yet as I dont have any first hand experience with them, but a friend has stocked up on WD drives and he's quite rapt with them...

The results of a two second google search threw up this:
storagereview.com

the differences are discussed in that article

132318 2003-03-31 05:22:00 Hi

Have 3 Seatgate drives- 9GB 5400, 40GB 5400 and 40GB 7200. Have had no problems at all with any of them (touch wood). I used to think the 9GB was quiet but its hard to hear the 2 40GB drives even when close.

There was an issue with one batch of Seagate drives, sorry I can't tell you more than that. Also, apparently, the speed is greatly improved with the 8MB buffered version over the 2MB version, as you would expect (see: jan/feb or march PC World HDD comparison).

Cheers
