132639 2003-04-01 07:13:00 What have I done ?

Over the time that I have had my computer I have created quite a number of shortcuts on my desk top. After some time I decided to gather them up and put them into a folder on the desktop in order to tidy up the appearance of the desktop

I could click on the “My Shortcuts Folder” and open folders as required and the open folders would appear on the task bar ready to be called into action. Thus the bar would show “My Shortcuts” together with any other folders & programmes I was working with at the time.

This morning when surfing on the net the Norton anti virus system would not allow a site to open and advised that it had quarantined the problem. I went to the Norton system and deleted the items quarantined
It was after this that I found that multiple “Folders” would not remain open on the task bar at the bottom of the screen.:(

Should I have clicked on the “Repair Item” Icon?
This is the first time I have been troubled since I ventured into computers back in Nov 1999

The only way I can get to “My Short cut folder’ is to left click on the File menu which now shows
“New, greyed out Create Shortcut, Delete, Rename, and Properties. Followed by My Shortcuts, the name of the current folder, followed again by Work off Line, And Close".
My query is why can I no longer keep open multiple FOLDERS on my task bar and/or desktop?:_|

132640 2003-04-01 08:42:00 Hi Grandad

What OS? I'm not familiar with the later NAV programs but, there should be a setting to backup or make a copy before files are repaired or deleted. Have a look at Nortons settings or options, what is configured there. What does the help file say? Where are the copys/backups stored.

There should also be an event log for virus incidents (& updates, etc,). Find out what virus it was and what actions Nortons took. Find the log with the same date and time if you can. Check out the virus at Symantics data base to see what it does and any remedies that may be available. Do this before restoring any files.

Thanks for your interest
I am running w98SE & Nortons 2002

I did not try any repairs as when i hit the delete button the dialouge box said I would loose any data but the delete would remove the problem from the files & the computer

132642 2003-04-01 11:27:00 Hi

Set Nortons to first try and repair the file/infection and then quarantine or delete if that doesn't succeed (you may be able to choose all three options in succession or rename file may also be an option offered . Probably too late this time but may save bother in the future .

What did the virus logs tell you, type/name of virus? depending on the beasty, you may be able to repair some of the damage eg . many viruses, worms, etc, write to the registry so may be reversed .

Cheers

132643 2003-04-01 12:39:00 Hi Murray

You are dealing with the “Elderly Confused” here, however I have managed to track down the activity file which reads as follows

1/04/03 10:23 DEFAULT ON OPEM COMPUTER
THE FILE
C:\ WINDOWS\TEMPORARY INTERNET
FILE CONTENT. 1E5 \EXH 410P euro 100 [ 1 ]HTM
IS INFECTEDWITH J.S.EXCEPTION.EXPLOIT VIRUS
ACCESS TO FILE WAS DENIED UNABLE TO REPAIR

There were 12 records at various times 1000hrs to 1100hrs with notes
Access Denied ,Unable To Repair, Unable to Quarantine.

Was finally quarantined at 1025:18
It appears to be a Programme file as far as I can make out
I carried out a complete scan nothing was found

I am off to bed now so will try to continue to-morrow

Thanks for your interest and suggestions. Being an absolute novice at this I may need to call in the Experts

Good Night And thank you

Have a look at this link (www.symantec.com) to find out about the virus.

That Virus: J.S.EXCEPTION.EXPLOIT VIRUS
is a Trojan Horse in other words a backdoor so a hacker can get in too your computer.

Did you say the file was quarantined??? If so then you’re safe :)

Also do you know what site you got that Trojan Horse from???

If so can you e-mail me the link to that site: stuartw77 at hotmail dot com (You will need to put in a @ = at & dot =. Before e-mail me that link ;))
So I can have a look at that site & see if it is the same site as the one I am thinking off.

Thanks for your interest. I am sorry to say, that in our panic we cleaned out the history files etc.so are unable to supply this information

It was quarantined but we deleted the files. On clicking on the delete icon the dialouge box said "if you delete this will remove the files and the information record from your computer"

We asumed from this that we would have no further trouble we are still unable to have multiple "folders"open on the desktop
