2003-03-31 07:21:00 | My dads modem dails in but when you try to load a web page it comes up with the standard page cannot be displayed. Nor does it work with outlook. He tried my brand new modem (which works fine on my system) but still nothing. What's going on? It's a windows 98 system with a standard 56k modem using Micrsoft Outlook and IE 6.

2003-03-31 07:27:00 | Often this is caused by a DNS error. Some ISP's automatically assign DNS addresses (xtra, ihug, etc) while others (paradise, etc) require the address to be added when you set up your connection. | Gorela (901) | |
2003-03-31 07:29:00 | so how can I fix it? | hamstar (4) | |
2003-03-31 07:55:00 | This has happened to me a couple of times on my Windows 98SE PC. I fixed it both times by uninstalling then reinstalling TCP/IP. You will need to have your Windows CD-ROM for the reinstall

2003-04-01 02:44:00 | This problem is often caused by firewalls such as Zonealarm. Also many anti-virus programs now have firewalls. Spyware is also a possible cause.

Open Control Panel, open Network, see if TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adapter is listed. If not post back and instructions will be given. You also need to check the Dial Up networking properties to check that they have been set according to the information that will have been given by the Internet Service Provider. |
