132892 2003-04-02 09:52:00 I want one, so ....

Some options seem to be:
1. Shop around this city (Auckland) for the best deal.
2. Fly to Japan, select my own and then import it (probably all-up significantly cheaper than 1.
3. I think there's websites dealing with how to go about getting good deals on them.

Any ideas, suggestions, pointers to websites, etc. gratefully received.

132893 2003-04-02 10:03:00 Hi rugila

Going to Japan yourself is probably going to cost you more in the long run.

Unless you are after something exotic and expensive, the best bet is to use the Auctions. Turners do good ones with pre-sale mechanical checks. I'd trust that more than a "discussion" in Japan with a non-English speaker. It's a helluva long way to go back if you don't like the deal.

In terms of price, it is Auctions 1, Dealers 2.

Cheers

132895 2003-04-02 10:27:00 Thanks Billy, your suggestions are probably good.

Couple of minor points (of interest?) however.

1. Last car I bought at Turner's it turned out (unbeknownst to any of us in advance) that the previous owner was my girlfriend's ex-husband (and his partner's). Now of all the possible prior owners of a randomly purchased Turner's car, how could that possibly happen? It was bizarre.
Not long later someone rammed that car with my son in it, wrote off that car, injured themselves badly, and hurt my son a bit. Rocky Graziano entitled his autobiography "Somebody up there likes me". Maybe I should write one called "Someone up there (at Turners?) doesn't".

2. Going to Japan would be quite fun even if no good deal were to eventuate. I hear there's lots of good English speakers there. Art Garfunkel once walked across Japan and I always thought that would be an interesting adventure to try, so I guess I was partly looking for the excuse.

132896 2003-04-02 10:41:00 If you want to go to Japan and are just looking for an excuse (via a cheap car).... don't, just go! and enjoy yourself, the world is your oyster!
It's very cheap to travel and great fun...

132897 2003-04-02 10:46:00 yeah jap imports are ok untill you try fixing them. i've lost count of the amount that have very hard to find parts or have a 3month wait for parts to arrive ex japan.

my $0.02 worth ;-)

132898 2003-04-02 10:54:00 Even if the parts are available they will cost you an arm and a leg. Mind you spare parts for all vehicles cost the earth unless you can get them from the wreckers yard. tommy (2826)
132899 2003-04-02 11:03:00 I went to Turners for a month or so, when I was looking for a new vehicle, and you didn't have to be a genius (or mechanic/panel beater, etc) to work out that some / many of the imports up for auction were rebuilt in Japan from wrecks (obvious overspray - new plastic parts, etc, etc) - admittedly they do it really well.
My nephew is a spray painter for a large panel beating firm in a major city and it is interesting to go for a wander around their workshops. Where a few years back they were repairing high quality European cars, most of their work is now patching up wrecked imports that dealers bring in and flog off - cause that's where they can make the money! Fronts missing, hail damage, etc.
After seeing what he works on, give me a good used NZ car with (hopefully) a little supporting paperwork anytime.
Only imports I would look at are possibly the Signature type where you have a large retail chain standing behind them

Hope this helps?

132900 2003-04-02 11:14:00 Advice all greatly appreciated.

Maybe I should have been more specific - it's a decent 4WD for offroad etc. activity that I want rather than a car as such.

Probably makes no difference to the points raised however.
