133023 2003-04-03 11:59:00 Hi

IMHO, wireless mice and keyboards are ok but, printers, networks (unless cables are diff to run) and devices that need decent bandwidth should be kept on a leash.

Cheers

133025 2003-04-03 21:25:00 A older PC around 450 MHZ pentium 3 with 256 of sd133 ram will do all that is required with a 20 gig HDD most people only use about 30% of thier PC s capabilities make sure that it has a 32 meg agp graphics card in it stay well away from onboard grahics slows down your PC especially for 3D gaming
Get a decent CRT monitor 17 or 19 " that is a good investment I personally have a 21 " myself your viewing platform is the most used item dont scrimp in that area ,
Stay away from H/P or Compaq PCs a generic one is far easier and cheaper to upgrade parts etc are easily interchangeable if you want speed then cable tv phone package from paradise is very good value

I would actually suggest that your friend look at buying one of the new centrino based portables as this definitely will be wired. Looking at some of the latest offerings from IBM for a wireless solution with everything but the kitchen sink.

The portability and long battery life will mean that your friend can now take their PC to the records centre and enter the data straight in rather than writing it down and then typing it in at a later date.

They would also be able to buy a docking station which they can hook up to the existing system peripherals (monitor, printer, scanner) and upgrade those as time and money allow.

Possibly stick with the existing PC and upgrade some of it. I would suggest two hard drives rather than one say 40 or 60Gb and a high quality video capture card with analogue and digital I/O ports so that they can also store the old videos. You've always got to remember that images (photos and video) use a lot of space. This is assuming that the current PC is relatively new.

30% aye? Im sure Ive crashed my Athlon XP 1700+ by slowing it down coz I multi-task so much!
Onboard I dont think exactly slows down your PC . . . rather the graphical performance . . . But yes, stay away from it! If you've got a 21" monitor, then it'd be nicer being able to run the latest games at a high res (1280x1024) with no visual lag . You wouldnt get that with OnBoard video, as mentioned, I have 64MB Shared (SiS chipset) and I can barely get a good framerate with the oldest games around at 640x480 .

My laptops' 2Meg NeoMagic card gets better framerates with Unreal Tournament!

Ah, now that I can agree with, having two 15" monitors, my eyes are a little worse for the wear!

Yeah . . . and they seem a bit . . well . . I dunno . . but since the merger . . and what with the 'spyware' being bundled with certain keyboards . . .

Im personally not an IBM fan, having had a lot of troubles with drivers and what-not . Toshiba or Acer are my preferred, but then again, everybody has their reasons .

133028 2003-04-04 06:20:00 SiS chipset Chill, therein lies your graphics deficit. Really! I never thought I would go back to a shared graphics setup. But, since I donated my old comp to the kids and as part of the overall deal with the financial controller, I had to hold back on getting a shiny new grfx card for awhile. So an Asus board with an Nforce chipset (+ agp slot for later) xp 1800+ cpu and 512 of DDR ram and this little comp hums along very nicely. I would never suggest its a high end gamer but its a stop gap I could live with for quite awhile :)

133029 2003-04-04 22:25:00 Yeah - I know, its not the best.. looking at the chipset/mobo its a generally budget one.

Itd have to be if my Laptops' 2meg NeoMagic card gives better results in Unreal Tournament!

There's a difference between onboard and shared though.. and this is shared..

Im sure nForce is onboard, but havent really looked into it!
