133457 2003-04-04 13:57:00 I have tried Mandrake linux 7.1 and 8.2 with my computer which has an AMD K6 cpu. I have had lots of problems with the Linux, they crash more than 98.
I enquired abou "Yoper linux" & they told me that the AMD K6 will not run their Linux. Could be the reason for my problems.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

the main distros should work fine on old hardware. linux seems to have a reputation for supporting old hardware. i wonder if your crashes relate more to a hardware fault?

133460 2003-04-04 23:36:00 Have you had a look at Mandrakes site? If there was a known problem with the AMD cpu I would have thought it would be on their site. Do you have access to any other distro's to experiment with. Dolby Digital (160)

The reason Yoper will not run on an AMD K6 is that Yoper is compiled and optimised for i686 cpu's (Thats why its faster than other Linux distributions). But the AMD K6 is not an i686 cpu. It's an i586 cpu.

133462 2003-04-05 03:27:00 Try running a memory test.

If you have all the disks you should find one on there called "Memtest86". It will add an entry to your LILO/GRUB bootloader.

133463 2003-04-05 04:38:00 Linux uses memory harder than Windows. The toughest test is compiling the system. :D Graham L (2)
