Personally, I'd be inclined to save your money and get something a bit newer.

Is it from someone you know & trust ??

It wont be fast, but usable for the basics . Upgrade the RAM to 1G, if it isnt already.
Keep in mind that laptops can be expensive to repair, dont be surprised if the batt is no good (due to age)

Have you checked NEW laptop prices at Warehouse Stationary etc etc, Ive seen some very good prices there (if you're on a tight budget) . At least you'll get a much faster system & a warranty.
If you dont need a laptop, consider a used desktop system. It may be cheaper & faster .
