What a show for the era, but my favourite was the Phantoms and the Mirages. Its not shown on here but the Phantoms thought theyd stolen the show and they had every reason to think that way, but the Mirages that followed them soon relegated them to second place. Ive yet to see another plane that you could barrel roll at damn near ground level and then stand it on its tail and go vertical up through the cloud base. 46 years on and some of those planes would still be competitive. ;) |

| 1309372 | 2012-10-29 06:46:00 | Yes, BM, it was a great show. Strangely, my lasting recalls were the Skytruk or whatever. Everything else was what you expect at an airshow - lots of noise, sexy fuselages and even more noise. And a non-existent commentary. The other recall? The then current squeeze who left the binoculars at home. God bless her ;) |

Well, other than jump up and down on the same spot, what could a Harrier do that say a Mirage couldnt? The Mirage was twice as fast with twice the range for starters. Did the Harrier have a Lucas C39 generator by some chance? |

| 1309377 | 2012-10-29 19:13:00 | The Ozzies used to fair throw their Mirages around, but a fair few of them went in. Around Butterworth base heaps crashed like darts stuck in the ground as per the F104 in kraut service. At OH when they came over on exercise everyone on base went outside on the day they took off for home because as sure as chickens have lips some would do the lowest fastest beatup right across the base. The pilots would have had a good night at the mess and in Parmy and were still pissed in the morning. |

Yes the Ozzie military seemed once to have a policy of self destruction. ;) The HMAS Melbourne never fired a shot in anger and still managed to sink two ships. :D |

Sea Harriers 20 Argy planes: Argy Skyhawks and Mirages -nil 20 -nil is a good score in anyones book surely ? |
